Max Sosin: Entertainment His Hobby, Public Service His 70-Year Record During the High Holy Days, in more than a score of synagogues, the annual appeal will be sounded in behalf of the Israel Bond Campaign. Conducting the investment effort is Max Sosin. It will be his way of celebrating his 70th birth- day. This is typical of Max, the popular raconteur, the man whose entertainment de- lights many audiences and in the process encourages support for the many causes in which he is deeply in- volved and towards which he has dedicated himself from his youth, in the 57 years of his residence in De- troit. His vocation is as a man- ufacturer's representative operating as the Sosin Sales Co. His avocation is his love for entertaining. This is an avocation that he pursues out of his personal enjoyment of Convention Site NEW YORK (JTA) — Ac- cording to statistics con- tained in the latest annual report published in Brussels by the Association of Inter- national Organizations, Is- rael ranked ninth in the world in 1978 as an interna- tional conference site. Some 130 international meetings are scheduled in Israel in 1980-1981. MAX SOSIN telling Yiddish and other stories, of singing and di- recting choirs—all on a voluntary basis. It is- so much voluntary that it costs him money. When he entertains for a cause in which he is involved, he winds up an appeal for funds by starting the con- tributions with his own. Max Sosin was born in Gomel, Russia, on Rosh Hashana in 1910. His father died when he was a child and he, therefore, was Bar Mitzva at the age of 12. He came to Detroit with his mother, Alta, and sister, Esther Weinstein, in 1923, experiencing the horrors of the anti-Semitic tirades of World War I. His mother died in 1925. Max studied in the Gar- field Public School and Central High School. He retained a knowledge of Russian and his mastery of Yiddish, often demon- strated in his storytelling skill, began as a child in Gomel. His activities here in- cluded several presidencies, including Cong. Bnai David and the City of Hope. His synagogue affiliation has an interesting char- acter. He remains active in Bnai David and he loves to sing there. He is to this day a member of the Bnai David Choir, under the direction of Cantor Hyman Adler. His affiliations, all of which are very active, are varied. As indicated, he is a leader in behalf of the Israel Bond Organization. He is active in the Jewish Na- tional Fund, Magen David Adorn for Israel, the Israel Red Cross counterpart, the Allied Jewish Campaign in behalf of which he headed a campaign section, the Zionist Organization of America — Detroit District, serving now for the second year as chairman of the Bal- four Concert committee, Yeshiva University, Bar- Ilan University and, in fact, wherever he can render service. The Lubavitcher are among the movements that count on him among their supporters and the Landsmanshaften speak of him with affection of his skill as an entertainer. Max was married to the former Ruth Greenstein in 1934. They have a son, Har- vey, who is now president of the Sosin Sales Co; a daugh- ter, Mrs Philip (Sally) Neuman; and six grandchildren.
