WARSEN Detroit's first Jewish religious services, con- ducted in 1850, were held at the home of Sara and Isaac Cousins. The Bet El Society was founded in 1850. Beth El, Detroit's first congregation, originally or- ndox, was established in The Beth El Lafayette cemetery, founded in 1851, is Michigan's oldest Jewish cemetery. Shaarey Zedek, formed in 1861, is Detroit's first Con- servative Congregation. Bnai Israel, Detroit's old- est Orthodox Congregation, was incorporated on June 19, 1871. The United Jewish Charities, Detroit's first or- ganized communal philan- thropies, were organized in 1899. The Babetta Brown Krolik Memorial and the Knights of Zion libraries were Detroit's earliest Jewish libraries. The Hebrew Free School, Detroit's first Jewish com- munal school, was estab- lished in 1902. The Hanna Schloss Cen- ter, founded in 1903, was Detroit's first Jewish com- munity center. The Shaarey Zedek Sis- terhood, originally the Aux- iliary, was organized in 1906. The Detroit Jewish Di- rectory of 1907 was the only directory to be pub- lished in Yiddish. The David Horodoker and the Turover Aid Societies, organized in 1910, were De- troit's earliest landsman- shaften. "The Survey of the De- troit Jewish Community of 1923" resulted in the forma- tion of the Jewish Welfare Federation of Detroit in 1926. Hyman Altman con- ducted Detroit's first Jewish radio hour. Louis LaMed established the first foundation for the advancement of Hebrew and Yiddish literature in America in 1940. Jacob Lang was De- troit's first Jewish blacksmith.
