Negev Air Bases Forced
Massive Archeological Dig
JERUSALEM — When
the Israel Defense Foices
decided that one of its new
Negev airbases would be
constructed in the Ovdah
Valley, the Education
Ministry's antiquities di-
vision sent in an emergency
survey team. It discovered
s- e 350 separate ar-
c logical sites, spanning
6000 BCE to the Third Cen-
tury CE.
We feared that the con-
struction crews would
trample everything under-
foot," said antiquities di-
vision director Avi Eitan. So
a massive five-week emer-
gency dig was organized.
About 20 sites were chosen,
including some Sixth Mil-
lenium prehistoric
dwellings and Nabatean
- Second or Third Century
structures.
Most of the sites are oval,

Grant to Improve
Braille Institute
Libraries, Files
NEW YORK — The
Jewish Braille Institute of
America (JBI) recently re-
ceived a grant of $60,000
from the Pew Memorial
Trust for the computeriza-
tion of the contents of the
libraries of the JBI and of its
subscriber files.
The funds are to be given
to the JBI over a three-year
period. They will be
matched in a one-for-three
ratio by the National
Endowment for the
Humanities, which
awarded a three-year chal-
lenge grant to the JBI.
The program will im-
prove the accessibility of
JBI's several library collec-
tions — braille, tape, large
print and cassette — to
blind and visually handi-
capped persons, including
the elderly, many of whom
have experienced declining
vision with advancing
years. In addition, corn-
puterization of JBI's sub
scriber information will en-
able the institute to pin-
point communications with
library users, alerting them
to acquisitions which are in
their specific areas of inter-
est.
