Netherlands Called Hostage of the Arabs

LOS ANGELES (JTA) —
The Netherlands being held
hostage by Arab powers is a
situation of "much greater
magnitude than what we
are witnessing in Iran," ac-
cording to Ephraim Evron,
Israel's ambassador to the
United States.
Evron spoke to some
3,000 delegates at the open-
ing session of Hadassah's
annual convention Monday
night. The convention,
which ended Wednesday,

year.
Holland gave in this week
to severe pressure from
Arab countries to move its
embassy from Jerusalem.
The pressure intensified
since the United Nations
Security Council adopted a
resolution by a 14-0 vote
calling for the removal of all
embassies from Jerusalem.
Evron issued a sca-
thing condemnation of
the U.S. abstention on
that vote. "This failure to
act is a source of great
danger to Israel and the
United States," he said.
"The Security Council
actions have contributed
to the present stalemate
in the negotiations be-
tween Israel and Egypt.
Their latest action was
immoral, hypocritical
and has no force.
"Even United States Sec-
retary of State (Edmund)

EPHRAIM EVRON

Muskie called the vote 'fun-
damentally flawed' and yet
the United States did not
veto the resolution."
Evron called on the Egyp-
tian government to resume
the stalled autonomy talks
which Egyptian President
Anwar Sadat recently
called off.

"Sadat has suspended
negotiations for the fourth
time since Camp David," he
said. We call upon him to
resume. Egypt's hope of a
change in United States pol-
icy after the elections (for
pressure on Israel) are pipe
dreams."
Evron declared that
"no amount of pressure
will make us accept any-
thing we believe is the
beginning of the end for
us."
When asked if the latest
UN vote symbolized a shift
in basic American policy
toward Israel,. the ambas-
sador replied that there are
disagreements on U.S. pol-
icy, especially in the UN,
but considering President
Carer's statement at the
Democratic National Con-
vention that the U.S. will
not pressure Israel, "we
must conclude that there is
no basic shift."

U.S. Under Arab Pressure to Act
As Political, Commercial Agent

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
Saudi Arabia anclIraq, rich
and powerful in oil and gold,
indicate they want the best
American aircraft for their
military use and that the
United States should per-
suade Israel to abandon
Jerusalem. In effect, these
major petroleum powers
would like the United
States to do their bidding,
both in commercial transac-
tions and in world politics.
Iraq and Saudi Arabia
lead 10 Arab 'countries
which are threatening eco-
nomic reprisals against na-
tions that support Israel's
sovereignty over
Jerusalem. They also are
demanding that the re-
maining countries that
have embassies in
Jerusalem move them out of
that city or face economic
punishment.
Thus far, most of the 13
countries with embassies_in
Jerusalem are resisting.
But of these countries
Uruguay, Chile and Ven-
ezuela have already an-
nounced that they are going
to move their embassies to
Tel Aviv. The Netherlands
moved its embassy this
week.
The United States has
always maintained its
embassy in Tel Aviv and,
uniquely, two consulates
in Jerusalem — one in the
West and the other in
East Jerusalem. The East
Jerusalem consulate acts
like an embassy for the
West Bank and Gaza.
Congressmen have de-
clared on the floor of the
House' of Representatives
that the East Jerusalem
consulate communicates di-
rectly with the State De-
partment rather than
through the embassy in Tel
Aviv, the normal procedure
for a consulate in every
other country in the world.
Saudi Arabia has de-
clared that a "holy war" is
the only way to deal with
Israel because of Israel's

Jerusalem law. Crown Pr- lomacy' 'from his view. Is-
