Nurse Designs Hospital Bed

JERUSALEM — Leah
Avni, director of Nursing
Services at the Hadassah
University Hospital, Mount
Scopus, has designed a hos-
pital bed that meets the
needs of both patients and
nurses.
"I wanted a multipurpose
bed, suitable for all wards
including obstetrics, or-
thopedics, rehabilitation
and the emergency room,"
she said.
"After combing through
catalogues and inspecting
beds in hospitals in the
United States, England and
Europe, I teamed up with
Rafi Blumenfeld, Israel's
leading interior designer, to
design my own bed which
would incorporate the best
features of all the beds I had
seen and would not be elec-
tronically controlled since
we are very energy con-
scious in Israel.
"We solved that prob-
lem by using a special
hydraulic jack from
Germany which is very
successful and, unlike a
manually cranked one,
not noisy."
, The bed is now in use at
the Mount Scopus hospital.
She describes it as a "high-
," bed. "Elderly patients
.1 it difficult to climb into
high beds; nurses and doc-
tors find it difficult to exam-
ine and attend to patients
when they have to stoop.
The jack solves the prob-
lem.
"The bed also has a pull-
out shelf at the foot which
extends its length and is
convenient for tall people.
The shelf is also useful for
extra blankets and pillows."
She continues, "The side
rails can be raised or low-
ered easily. The elderly,
post-operative or heavily
medicated patients are
often confused and try to get
out of bed. While the rails
prevent the patient from
falling out, they are not too

Nurse Avni concludes: "I from place to place.

The Sabbath loaves (hal-
las) are traditionally
covered both from below
and above when they are
placed upon the Sabbath ta-
ble.
Some authorities claim
that this is done because the
Sabbath loaves are sup-
posed to remind us of the
manna which was provided
for the Jews on their way
through the wilderness. It is
said of the manna that it
was covered from below and
above by a layer of dew to
protect and preserve it. The
same is done for the hallas
of the Sabbath by having a
cloth both above and below
them.

JERUSALEM — A non-
profit, volunteer organiza-
tion in Israel called
"Shomer Achi Anochi" (My
Brother's Keeper) has been
fighting to awaken the con-
science of Israel and the
Free World to the plight of
the Prisoners of Zion who
are steadily deteriorating in
the hell of Soviet prisons.
Shomer Achi Anochi has
one objective: the release of
all Prisoners of Zion. To ac-
complish this, they have
struck out in varied direc-
tions. Posters of Anatoly
Shcharansky, bearing ex-
cerpts from conversations
with him before his arrest,
have been displayed
throughout the cities;
demonstrations are fre-
quently held; speaking
engagements take place in
schools, youth clubs and in
private homes; press con-
ferences are called periodi-
cally; bulletins are sent out
to libraries, youth groups,
schools and kibutzim.
Through correspondence
,and, „the, sending,
gift

packages during holidays,
an attempt is made to estab-
lish warm ties with each of
the prisoners.
More recently the organ-
ization, which has a varied
membership, most of whom
are religious Jews, pub-
lished a pamphlet in both
Hebrew and English
entitled "Testimony." In
addition to individual tes-
timonies of Prisoners of
Zion, letters smuggled out
of Russia reveal in shocking
detail the living and work
conditions, punishment
cells, emotional stress, med-
ical treatment, malnutri-
tion and consequent de-
velopment of diseases pre-
valent throughout Soviet
camps.

SHEL ROTT

Nothing is less sincere
than our mode of asking and
giving advice. He who asks
seems to have deference for
the opinion of his friend,
while he only aims to get
approval of his own and
make his friend responsible
for his action. And he who
gives repays the confidence
supposed to be placed in him
by a seemingly disin-
terested zeal, while he sel-
dom means anything by his
advice but his own interest
or reputation. -

A second reason is pro-
vided by other sources who
claim that the covering was
provided for the _hallas to
indicate that this bread was
something special to be
served, on the special day,
i.e., the Sabbath.
A third reason is ad-
vanced by still others
who claim that the cover-
ing is done because of the
fact that the prayer over
the wine is recited before
the meal begins on the
Sabbath instead of hav-
ing the wine consumed

Six things are not fit for
an educated man: to walk in
the street perfumed, to walk
alone at night, to wear worn
shoes, to dally with a
woman too long in the
street, to sit at a table with
illiterate men, and to arrive
late at the synagogue.

only during the meal as is
the case at other times of
the week.
If the wine was blessed
while the hallas were ex-
posed it would be sort of an
insult to the dignity of the
bread which is usually
blessed first, it being the
staff of life. Since the hallas
are covered while the wine
is blessed, it is as if they
were not as yet present.
This, of course, indicates
how much concern should
be exercised so as not to hurt
the feelings of others who
might be bypassed and feel
hurt.
