Friday, August 29,1980 '41 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Israel Saddened by Holland Embassy Move JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Israel reacted with "deep sorrow and sadness" Tues- day at Holland's decision to move its embassy to Tel Aviv. A foreign ministry statement, drafted, it is un- derstood, at the highest level,_ recalled Holland's re- cord of saving Jews during World War II and expressed 'ness at the fact that the > < Ach government was now succumbing to Arab pres- sures. The statement concluded by reasserting Jerusalem's status as Israel's immutable and indivisible capital. Holland decided to move its embassy following a United Nations Security Council resolution last week which censured Israel for its Jerusalem law and called on countries with embassies in Jerusalem to move them. The Dutch announce- ment was followed by similar announcements from Haiti, Panama and Costa Rica. Chile, Uruguay, Ecuador, Ven- ezuela and El Salvador will also move their em- bassies. Holland was the only European nation with a Jerusalem em- bassy. Avraham Sharir, chair- man of the Likud, termed Holland's move as "a dis- graceful surrender to oil pressure on the part of our best friend in Europe, but _ the world today worships the god of oil." Ammnon Rubinstein, of the Shair faction in the Knesset, told Israel Radio that the responsibility for - Holland's decision lay with the Israeli government and - the opposition Labor Party which had allowed the Jerusalem law to be adopted by the Knesset. "It will take many years of patient work to put right the political damage Israel has suffered as a result of the law," he said. A statement issued by the Dutch government in The Hague Tuesday announcing its decision to move its em- bassy recalled it had prev- iously regretted Israel's "unilateral decision" to pro- claim united Jerusalem as Israel's capital as an obsta- cle toward a settlement of the Arab-Israeli conflict. The statement also said that the Dutch govern- ment had resolved to move its embassy in line with its policy of imple- menting UN Security Council resolutions. Holland had been under intense pressure from Arab not be divided. In a speech to young Jewish Diaspora leaders, who had just completed a course of Jewish studies at the Hebrew Univer- sity, Burg rejected Egyp- tian President Anwar Sadat's proposal for di- vided sovereignty in Jerusalem, although leaving the city as one municipality. Burg said the only exam- ple of such a divided sover- eignty is Berlin. "It is the clear policy of the Israel government that Jerusalem is not Berlin," he said. "Jerusalem cannot be di- vided and there is no part of Jerusalem that can belong to another sovereign." the council's 290-member churches to exert pressure through their governments for Israel to withhold all ac- tion on Jerusalem.
