Narkiss' remarks were directed to Detroit area rabbis and synagogue leaders attending the recent Israel Bonds Pre:High Holy Days Appeal luncheon seminar. Chaired by Max Sosin, High Holy Days Appeal chairman, the seminar planned the Israel Bonds appeal during High Holy Days services in many of Detroit's synagogues. Synagogues participat- ing in the appeal, under the theme "Jerusalem- United Forever," are Beth Abraham Hillel Moses, Beth Achim, Bnai David, Beth Shalom, Bnai Zion, Beth Tefilo Emanuel Tikvah, Bnai Israel Beth Yehuda, Dovid Ben Nuchim, Shomrey Emunah, Shaarey Shomayim, Young Israel of Green- field, Young Israel of Oak-Woods and Young Israel of Southfield. The national goal set for the appeal is $100 million. More than 1,000 Orthodox, Conservative and Reform synagogues will be par- ticipating throughout the United States and Canada. George Bass, president emeritus of the Downtown Synagogue, will be honored by the congregation on the occasion of his 75th birth- day at a dinner-dance, 6 p.m. Oct. 5 at Adat Shalom Synagogue. Bass has been involved with the Downtown Synagogue for approx- imately 25 years and served as president from 1964 to 1978. Bass has served the con- gregation as president, sex-- ton, leader of services and procurer for the two daily ininyanim. - The Oct. 5 affair will feature hors d'oeuvres, dinner, open bar, an or- chestra and Max Sosin as master of ceremonies.
