Works of Austrian Jewish
Author Perutz Re-Issued

By MARGUERITE
KOZENN CHAJES

VIENNA — The Aust-
rian Jewish author Leo
Perutz, who died in 1957,
like Franz Kafka, Max Brod
and Franz Werfel belonged
to the "famous Prague Cir-
cle."
His books became world
renowned in the '20s and
'30s, but after World War II,
they were out of print and
almost forgotten.
Due to the newly awak-

ened interest in fantasy and
historic literature, the lead-
ing publishing house, Paul
Zsolnay, undertook to re-
issue some of the most im-
portant works by Perutz.
The newest edition of
"The Swedish Rider," a
most unusual novel that
plays in the 17th Century in
Germany, just came off the
press.
It is considered Leo
Perutz' master work!

Tradition of Selichot
Penitential Prayers

By RABBI SAMUEL FOX

(Copyright 1980, JTA, Inc.)

"Selichot" is the name
given to an order of Jewish
liturgy which aims to
achieve forgiveness for the
transgressions we have
committed from the mercy
of the Almighty. They usu-
ally contain liturgical ex-
pressions of praise for the
Almighty, plus confessions
of our sins and requests for
His forgiveness.
This type of liturgy is
usually recited on fast days.
A mini-form of this liturgy
is usually recited during
weekday prayers, especially
on Mondays and Thursdays.
The most popular time for
these prayers is the period
before Rosh Hashana the
period between Rosh
Hashana and Yom Kippur,
and, of course, on the day of
Yom Kippur itself.
The Sephardic tradi--
tion requires that
Selichot be recited dur-
ing the month before
Rosh Hashana and dur-
'ng the period between
Rosh Hashana and Yom
Kippur. This period
corresponds to the 40
days that Moses spent on
Mount Sinai before he re-
ceived the second set of
Ten Commandments
which signaled the for-
giveness granted by the
