This little shtick was pul-
led at the U.S. Committee
Sports for Israel Hall ,of
Fame dinner which was
held in Los Angeles a couple
of weeks ago. Al Campanis,
general manager of the Los
Angeles Dodgers, a product
of New York schools and
New York University, was
led upon to induct Al Ro-
len, president of the New
York Yankees, into the
Jewish Hall of Fame.
When Campanis got up to
speak he acknowledged the
fact that Nat Holman,
president of the U.S. Com-
mittee Sports for Israel, Was
in the audience and brought
out the-fact that as a student
at NYU he used to attend
lectures given by Nat and
he heaped praise upon the
famous hoop mentor, com-
monly referred to as "Mr. )
Basketball."
Campanis has a sly sense
of humor and related to the
audience of over 400 that
while he attended a rival
school, City College, he was,
in addition to a fair basket-
ball player and a good
baseball player, on the foot-
ball team. As Campanis re-
lates it the story goes as fol-
lows:
"Our backfield, and
you must remember this
is at a time when NYU
was a strong football
power in the East, was
comprised of three Jews
and myself. I was one of
the running backs and
was usually referred to
by my three backfield
mates as the shaygetz.' I
don't have to explain to
this audience what a
shaygetz is, but at any
rate, I was the shaygetz in
the backfield.
- At that time we played a
very heavy schedule o _ f an
intersectional nature and
took on some of the big pow-
ers on the gridiron.
"During the Ohio State
game, we took the ball, on
one of our better moments,
close to our 10 yard line and
began to move. Time after
time I was given the pigskin
(if you'll excuse the expres-
sion) and I managed to pick
up three and four yards at a
clip and the ultimate result
was that we really brought
the ball down to about their
three yard line. At this
point, after yeoman duty on
my part, the ball was given
to the two other running
acks and NYU was pushed
ack to about the eight yard
line, at which time we called
a time-out.
"Before the quarterback
could give his instructions, I
piped up 'Hey, what's be-
come of the shaygetz all of a
sudden?' This brought on a
burst of laughter and some
of the boys got so hysterical
that we were penalized an
additional five yards for
holding up the game. As it
turned out we didn't score
and the shaygetz didn't get
his hands on the ball again
during that drive."-

by Campanis tore the
