How I loved to kiss the cheek

To merge my soul with stones that speak

There was a murmur in the silence
as of angels that stood nearby.
They flapped their wings, as in defiance,
to pronounce a Truth and damn a lie.
"These Walls betoken an unbroken promise;
They do not shelter ruins within.
Think not Israel's past a dark abyss,
Filled with rancor, remorse, chagrin."

"There comes from Israel's ancient loins
a scion of David, pure and free,
That will confound the cue of arcane coins
and bring to life Old Jacob's Tree."
It is a Tree of Life, of joy and peace,
whose growth Esau's -sons cannot restrain.
And even venom of Ishmael's release
will not silence God's refrain.
Stand proud, ye ancient Walls,
guarding the portals of bygone past,
Though, true, His kingdom rises and falls,
the final triumph will forever last.

Israel Energy. Capability Gets
Boost in Cabinet Canal OK
JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The Cabinet gave its ap-
proval to the "sea-to-sea"
canal project, a much-
mooted idea that would pro-
vide hydro-electric power
from a canal to be dug from
the Mediterranean to the
Dead Sea.
Prof. Yuval Neeman, the
leading scientist who has
been closely involved in the
drafting of the proposals,
said after the meeting he be-
lieved work could begin
within three years. The
Cabinet reportedly esti-
mated that the project will
cost some $750 million.
According to Haaretz,
U.S., European and Israeli
businessmen have ex-
pressed interest in par-
ticipating in financing the
project — in return for
rights to the electric power
to be generated.
The Cabinet resolved
to set up a special inter-
ministerial authority that
will be responsible for all
the technical, financial
and political aspects of
this major endeavor.
Energy Minister Yitzhak
Modai confirmed that over-
seas investors had already
shown interest in the canal
project. He said the canal
would not need Joidan's as-
sent, since Jordan's rights
and interests in the Dead
Sea would not be affected.
But if Jordan wished to
cooperate, it, too, could
benefit from the canal, the
minister said.
He estimated that the
canal project would take up
to a decade to complete and
that when completed, it
could save Israel more than
$1 billion annually in
energy outlay.
Neeman said the project
would have many benefits
for Israel, including the pos-
sibility of building solar
energy ponds similar to the
one Israel inaugurated by
the Dead Sea last year. The
waters could also be used to
feed cooling plants for in-
dustries along its route. He
also said the canal will save
the Dead Sea.

Bnai Brith International
recently denounced the UN
Security Council for calling

Prior to the council vote,
Jack J. Spitzer, president of
the organization, sent tele-
grams to Donald McHenry,
the U.S. ambassador to the
UN, and to the UN ambas-
sadors from Great Britain
and France urging that they
veto the pernicious resolu-
tion".
