Shaarey Zedek. They are: Dr. Thomas N. Bonner, president of Wayne State University; Dr. William Haber, economist, retired dean of the Univer- sity of Michigan College of Literature, Science and the Arts; and Father Robert A. Mitchell, S.J., president of the University of Detroit. The dinner will pay trib- ute to University of Michi- gan President Dr. Harold T. Shapiro. A forest of 25,000 trees will be established in Israel in honor of Dr. and Mrs. Shapiro. Dr. Shapiro is the first Jewish University of Michigan president. Dr. Bonner was the speaker at Metropolitan Detroit JNF's recent annual meeting. He has been president of Union College and chancel- lor of Union University; and president of the University of New Hampshire after service as vice president and provost at the Univer- -;+v of Cincinnati. -- was the 1972 Dr. Hanel Jewish National Fund hon- oree. ROBERT MITCHELL An internationally famous economist, Dean Haber retired in 1968, after 36 years of service as dean of U-M's LSA Col- lege, the largest on the U-M campus. He is the adviser to the university executive officers. Dr. Haber organized the National Refugee Service. He is a life member of the Executive Committee of the American Jewish Commit- tee, and of the American Joint Distribution Commit- tee. In 1948, he went to Germany as special adviser on Jewish affairs to Gen. T eius Clay, the American -,•hief. The . _ commander - ; n-- DP camps were his training ground. He has worked in defense of Israel and in behalf of Is- rael's security. He is honor- ary chairman of Bnai Brith's Hillel Foundation on university and college campuses; he has been na- tional president of Ameri- can ORT Federation for al- most 30 years and president of the central board of the World ORT Union. He is listed on the board of governors of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and of Brandeis University, and holds honorary docto- rates from several univer- sities, in this country, and in Israel. The German-born Mr. Frank was the only survivor of a family of four ferreted out in 1944 by the Nazis from the backroom of a Dutch warehouse, where the family had been hidden to escape the Holocaust. "The Diary of Anne Frank" was published worldwide and turned into a Broadway play and movie. TEL AVIV (JTA) — Prof. Jonathan Magnes died Aug. 12. He was 68. Born in New York City, he was brought to Palestine in 1922 by his father, the late Prof. Judah Leib Magnes, who was the first head of Hebrew University. Jonathan Magnes hearlPd the university me' 40 school's department physiology from 1957 to 1968 where he was ap- pointed dean of the school. He was also president of the YMHA in Jerusalem. He served on UNES- CO's international advis- ory committee on arid zones research and on the neuro-chemistry panel of the International Brain Research Society. He was a founder and president of the Israeli Society of Physiology and Pharmacology and a member of the World Fed- eration of Neurology.
