A portrait of life in New
York's colorful garment dis-
trict is provided by Yiddish
novelist Samson Apter in
"The Preisingers," a new re-
lease from A.S. Barnes pub-
lishers.
The book, translated from
Yiddish by Apter and
Joseph Singer, tells the
story of Sidney Preisinger,
who is scheming to seize
control of the dressmaking
firm founded by his father,
J.B. Preisinger. His ambiti
ous plans include moving
the company to a small town
in Pennsylvania where the
labor is cheap and there are
no unions to contend with.
Apter pottrays life on
Seventh Avenue with the
uncanny accuracy that only
someone who had worked in
the garment district, as he
has, can. Apter has been
published as an author and
poet in Canada, France, Is-
rael and the United States.
His work has appeared in
several Yiddish periodicals.

Detroit Is Site
for Docu-Drama
of Berlin Murder

"Assignment Berlin," a
docu-drama dealing with
the 1921 assassination of a -
former Prime Minister of
the Ottoman Empire in Be-
rlin, is set to begin filming
in Detroit this fall. -
It will be the first time
that Detroit is used in a film
to represent another locale,
according to the project's di-
rector, Hrayr. Toukhanian.
"Berlin as it was in 1921 no
longer exists," Toukhanian
said, "so why not Detroit?
"The vintage cars are
available and sore some of
the charming, old houses in
the Detroit area. And then
there is the Masonic Temple
. . . One of the Masonic lodge
rooms is almost a duplicate
of the actual room in which
the trial depicted in the film
was held."
Toukhanian, a Detroit
resident, is president of
Video Films, Inc. He has
lined up several Broadway
and television actors to star
in the film.

by Rabbi Hershel Klapisch,
principal of the Albert Eins-
tein School in Panama and
head of Panama's Jewish
community.
He pointed to the revolu-
tion in Nicaragua, violence
in El Salvador between the
leftwing and government
forces, Cuba's increasing
influence in Central
America and improved rela-
tions between Central
American countries and
Third World countries as
the main factors in the de-
