`Archie Bunker'
Helps Chabad

LOS ANGELES (JTA) —
Carroll O'Connor, televi-
sion's "Archie Bunker," will
lead astar-studded show in
efforts to rebuild Chabad
House here through a local
telethon on Channel 9 Sept.
8.
O'Connor will play a
Najor role in the four-hour
ent, proceeds of which

burned down in a fire that
killed three people last

Flint Jews Begin Change
From Council to Federation

Plans have been com-
pleted for the annual meet-
ing which will signal the
transition of the Flint
Jewish Community Council
to a newly constituted Flint
Jewish Federation.
The meeting will be held
at 6:45 p.m. Sept. 7 in Flint's
Temple Beth El with des-
sert, followed at 7:30 p.m. by
the meeting and election of
officers. The nominating
committee, under the
chairmanship of Murray
Moss, has presented a slate
of candidates for officers

a resident of the metropoli-
tan Flint area is a member
of the Flint Jewish Federa-
tion and is eligible to par-
ticipate in all the services
and programs of the Flint
Jewish Federation.

New Year Cards
for Refusniks

In cooperation with over
100 Jewish communities
throughout the United
States, the Community Re-
lations Committee of the
Flint Jewish Community
Council is participating in a
campaign to send a million
New Year cards to long-
term refuseniks, Soviet
Jews who have been wait-
ing over six years for per-
mission to leave the USSR.
The council is preparing a
New Year card, printed in
Russian, which will be dis-
tributed to the community.
The card will contain a
greeting for the New Year, a
listing of Jewish holidays
and the Hebrew alphabet.
Pre-addressed envelopes to
Flint's adoptee, Lev Roit-
burd, will be included.
Roitburd, his wife, Lilia,
and one child have been
waiting eight years to emi-
grate to Israel.

Sidney Barnett Marks 80th

Sidney Barnett, former
Pontiac resident, of Hallan-
dale, Fla., was honored by
relatives at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. Hershel (Joyce)
Stuart on the occasion of his
80th birthday.
Born in Pontiac, one of 13
children of Mr. and Mrs.
Joseph (Rachel) Barnett,
the first Jewish family to
settle in Pontiac, Mr. Bar-
nett married the former
Golda Meyers of Detroit in
1937. They have a son,
Donald J., a lecturer at
California State Univer-
sity.
The senior Mr. Barnett
had a retail business iri Pon-
tiac for 52 years. He was
active in the Jewish Wel-
fare Federation for 25 years
and was a life member of
Temple Beth Jacob, for
which he was treasurer and
president. •
He also was treasurer
of the Pontiac Chamber
of Commerce, chairman
of the Pontiac Better
Business Bureau and was

He was a life member of
