Black's War Role Inspires Drive to Halt 2nd Holocaust

OAKLAND, Calif. — "I
saw things I don't think
anybody should see: people
who'd been beaten, starved
— walking skeletons."
Leon Bass, a black high

Philadelphia spoke to stu-

the Oakland Post reported.
He spoke with authority,
because he was there — as a
19-year-old U.S. army pri-
vate who helped to liberate
Jews and other victims from
Buchenwald concentration
camp.
Bass told the students,
"This is not just a horror

I'm here to tell you is how
you can avoid getting
caught up in this.

able to challenge authority

"If you don't read," Bass
added, "you're fair game. If
you don't have skills you
can be had.
"But being smart isn't
enough either," he
cautioned. "The Holocaust,
the worst organized killing

RIO DE JANEIRO (JTA)
— The Brazilian Jewish
community was shocked by
vandalism at a nursery
school in the Jewish quarter
of Born Retiro in Sao Paulo
Aug. 10. The nursery, main-
tained by the Jewish
philanthropic organization,
Ofidas, takes care of 130
poor children, none of them
Jewish, Mondays through
Fridays.
The vandals destroyed
the piano, a television set,
dolls, the tables and desks.
They smeared the walls
with swastikas and
obscenities. One unde-
stroyed doll was left by
them with the inscription
"death to the children."
The vandalism in the
nursery school occurred at
the same time as uniden-
tified persons were destroy-
ing newsstands where lef-
tist and opposition weeklies
in general are on sale.

care about each other —
in your families, in your
school and in your city.
Either we love one an-
other and cling to one an-
other," he said, quoting
author James Baldwin,
"or the sea will engulf us,
the light will go out."
Bass urges students to
protest when they hear
ethnic jokes, to stop any
fights they see, to "dime on"
or report drug pushers --to
get involved now whenever
they saw others in danger or
potential danger.
"In the Holocaust," he re-
called, "people and coun-
tries stood by and did noth-
ing. Ten years after the
camps began, the U.S. fi-
nally went into action. If
they'd had your grandma or
parents or brothers and sis-
ters in those camps, you'd
have thought that was a lit-
tle too late."
. On April 13, "Yom
Hashoa," the day set aside
each year to commemorate
the Holocaust, he was hon-
ored for his work by the
area's Jewish community at
Temple Emanu-El in San
Francisco.

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
Martin Mendelsohn, a lead-
ing Nazi-hunter in the U.S.
Department of Justice who
was shifted from his inves-
tigatory duties in January
following a policy dispute,
has been appointed to the
staff of the House Subcom-
mittee on Immigration,
Refugees and International
Law that is charged with
examining federal govern-
ment activity regarding al-
leged Nazi war criminals in
the United States.
Mendelsohn was named
as a counsel to the subcom-
mittee by its chairperson
Rep. Elizabeth Holtzman
(D-N.Y.), who indicated
that he will be primarily re-
sponsible for investigating
why criminals were allowed
to enter the United States
and remain undisturbed in
this country for some 35
years.
