THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 46 Friday, August 15, 1980 • WSU Press Publishes Mozart Biography By MARGUERITE KOZENN CHAJES VIENNA — Hugh Otta- way, a well-known writer and broadcaster on musical subjects, has written the most recent biography of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. It was just published by the Wayne State University Press in Detroit. The book contains a series of chronological observa- tions built around the nuc- leus of what we know about Mozart. 357-1056 SUITE 110-HERITAGE PLAZA 24901 NORTHWESTERN HWY. Re-elect Senior District Judge Clarence A. Reid Jr. 46th district court Ottaway's scholarly and interesting text is enhanced by carefully-selected illus- trations that include engravings and paintings of Mozart, his family, friends and fellow musicians. There are also reproductionS of manuscripts, or opera scenes and of places where Mozart lived. Ottaway states in the preface that "when he was invited to write the book, he was urged to keep in mind the needs of the general reader, who is not familiar with the musical terminology." He most likely "kept it in mind" but the book is cer- tainly more for musicians than "the general reader." Ottaway shows a great knowledge of the music lit- erature in general and seems to have studied Mozart's works thoroughly, as well as the "Koechel Ver- zeichniss" (a compilation of over 600 titles of Mozart's compositions). The book is really an outstanding result of a most erudite and com- prehensive research and study. The author, of course, de- scribes the influence that Lorenzo Da Ponte had on Mozart. The order was originally issued by Ezer Weizman last May while he was still Defense Minister following information that Kahane initiated a "serious illegal action." The specifics of this action were never revealed. Under recent Israeli regulations detention orders must be renewed every thee months. Detroit Area Retail Kosher Meat Dealers Assoc. . Meanwhile, Paul Nettl, the German musicologist who some years ago taught at the Wayne State Univer- sity, has very informatively written about Mozart's rela- tionship, to Da Ponte and also to the Free Masons. Under Empress Maria Theresia of Austria (who died 200 years ago) Free Masonry was Oolished, but Da Ponte, Moiart and his father Leopold were devoted followers of Free Masonry in spite of the Imperial ban. Leopold and Wolfgang were greatly influenced by the "enlightment" taught by Moses Mendelssohn, the popular philosopher, whose book "About the immortal- ity of the soul" they.,ap- preciated so much. - 24721 Coolidge, 'Oak Park LI 3-8860 Allan Al Cohen, Joe Felstein, Michael Cohen NORTHGATE KOSHER MEAT & POULTRY 25254 Greenfield, Oak Park - 967-3907 Jack Miller HARVARD ROW KOSHER MEATS 21780 W. 11 Mile, Southfield 356-5110 John Katz Under supervision of the Council of Orthodox Rabbis While quantities last and we also reserve right to limit quantities. Shah's Ironies WASHINGTON — Newsweek magazine re- ported that there were many ironies in the Shah of Iran's asylum and burial in Egypt. The Egyptians were grateful to the Shah for cut- ting off oil to Ivael and sup- plying Egypt with materiel during the Yom Kippur War. Israelis point out, how- ever, that during the War of Attrition, 1968-1970', the Shah supplied Israel with 23,000 tons of bombs to be used against Gamal Abdel Nasser's armies. • Sam Barnett Big or small, - we custom the music to your needs. 968-2563 tom g&q- Btaam Registered Electrologists Come in and let us remove your unwc...Lec: hair • problem and improve your apnnar ance.
