He was in private practice for five years and in 1964 was ap- pointed assistant Michi- gan attorney general and general counsel of the Michigan Civil Rights Commission. He held this position for three years. In 1968 and 1969, he was special assistant attorney general of Michigan and chief appellate attorney for the Defenders office of Legal Aid and Defenders Associa- tion of Detroit. On his first try for elected office he won a seat on the Detroit City Council in 1969 and was re-elected in 1973, receiving the most votes of any candidate thus becom- ing the City Council president for the next four years. He left that office in January 1978 and in No- vember 1978 was elected the U.S. Senator from Michigan. Judge Cohn received his law degree from the Uni- versity of Michigan (1949). From 1949 to 1961, he was associated in private prac- tice with his father, Irwin Cohn. From 1961 to 1979 he was a partner in the law firm of Honigman, Miller, Schwartz and Cohn: He served in the U.S. Army, served on the Michigan Social Service Commission in 1963, the Michigan Civil Rights Commission from 1972 to 1975 and was its chair- man in 1974 and 1975. Judge Cohn was a member of the Detroit Board of Police Commis- sioners from 1975 to 1979 and served as its chairman in 1979. He has been active on the Detroit Bar Associa- tion, the State Bar Associa- tion, the American Bar Association, is past vice president of the American Jewish Committee and past treasurer of the Jewish Wel- fare Federation. He was ap- pointed judge of the East District Court last October.
