THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Palestinians Join Volleyball Federation TEL AVIV (JTA) — Two Israeli delegates attending the International Vol- leyball Federation in Mos- cow sent a cable to Israel saying that they were un- able to prevent the ac- ceptance of a Palestinian group, Falastin, into the federation. "Our opposition was irdly heard," the cable stated. We were happy that we were not ousted from the European group. Falastin was able to muster a strong majority." Israel, as a member of the European group, had already been in- vited to take part in the European volleyball cham- pionship game in Finland next year. The two Israelis, Chaim Karpowski, of the Israel Sports Federation's vol- leyball committee, and Moshe Rash, of the fed- eration's executive, were dispatched to Moscow last week where the 1980 Olympics were being held after a cable was re- ceived here warning that the International Vol- leyball Federation would discuss proposals to drop Israel from membership and co-opt the Palesti- nian sports group. Falastin is now a member of six international federa- tions — volleyball, wrestl- ing, handball, basketball, table tennis and weight lift- ing — and therefore qual- ified to apply for, member- ship in the International Olympic Committee. A senior Palestine Liberation Organization delegate in Moscow has already an- nounced that the PLO will apply to the committee so that theFalastin group may take part in the-next Olym- pic Games in Los Angeles in 1984.
