The Best of Everything

A VISIT TO the North-
field Hilton Hotel for a Fit-
ness First dinner . . . being
featured along with its reg-
ular menu every day for
lunch and dinner . . . was an
all around treat.
Firstly, the maitre d' em-
bodies something you won't
see at too many places —
anywhere . . . talent per-
sonified . . . Brian Minard,
at the Wicker Works eight
months, is far more than
just an ordinary maitre d'.
He was an advertising
gent in California, writing
songs for commercials . . . a
waiter on the Cunard Lines
. . . wrote words to a not-
yet-released song with
music by Paul McCartney
. . . wrote a book, "Wersea
Sensa Yuma?" (Where's
your sense of humor?) .. .
was in the janitorial busi-
ness . . . and created shows
for the British Broadcasting
Co. (BBC) . . . including the
popular "Show Of The
Week," one of which was
"Mercer Magic" . . . a musi-
cal tribute to Johnny
Mercer.
He was born in Liver-
pool in 1938 ... and has
also worked as a cab
driver, air steward, ship's
writer, bacon packer,
docker, barman, sales
manager, carpet sales-
man, electric plater and
roofer ... He is a pub-
lished poet and songwri-
ter ... and was under
contract to Johnny
Mercer for a song he
wrote called "Sanctify in
Grace" ... His travels in-
clude about 21 countries.
But of all the people he
has met . . . stars and roy-
alty . . . Brian proudly ad-
mits that the most interest-
ing are his two children,
six-year-old Danny and
10-year-old Michele.
He fits in perfectly with
Pine Knob stars who come
to Northfield Hilton since
they have a multitude of
mutual friends.
The Fitness First dinner
was very interesting and de-
licious . . . Our waiter,
Maurice Roberts, has to be
ranked among the best .. .
Courteous, efficient, smil-
ingly pleasant and oozing
with quality personality.
Northfield Hilton
opened four years ago,
Feb. 9, 1976, and Maurice
has been there 31/2 years
... two years room serv-
ice . . . and 11/2 years as the
very fine Wicker Works
waiter that he is.
Each day on the Fitness
First menu are featured
varied lunch and dinner
items with their calorie
count . . . Also served daily
for dinner is an Alaskan
King Crab Feast with
brown rice pilaf, green veg-
etables and salad (about 450
calories).
Since this was Tuesday,
my choice was A Pocketful
of Protein . . . tender strips
of roast sirloin, lettuce and
tomatoes, stuffed into pita
bread, served with health
salad (about 410 calories
plus dressing).
Getting to the other

menu, the large piece of
scrod Maurice brought me
was still- in the pan . .
sauteed and then baked .. .
The Wicker Works salad
bar . . . 25-feet long . . . con-
tinues as one of the finest
around . . . And of course,
we also had the delicious
black bean soup . . . with
crumbled onions and eggs
. . . laced with sherry.
Next door was Bob
Seeley at Charley's Crab
. . . which has the only bar
in Michigan with a piano
imbedded in it ... Only
way to get to the piano
the night I was there was
by jumping over the bar
because the back floor
was being fixed ... On
other days, the way to
Bob's piano is through
the back, by the kitchen
... Most unusual.
Bob and Brian have col-
laborated on a tune which
they call "The Blues Are
Heavy" . . . He played it for
us and provided a very
worthy rendition of a de-
lightfully listenable tune.
Bob is among the best
with his boogie woogie . . .
and he'll match anyone with
"St. Louis Blues," "After
Hours," etc. . . . Charley's
Crab was built in Sep-
tember 1976 and Bob Seeley
has been there since.
Had a nightcap in Hur-
ley's at Northfield Hilton
. . . where John Doyle has
been manager a year-and-
a-half . . . For six months
prior, he was bartender at
Hurley's ... It's nice to have
someone like John, courte-
ous and with the ability to
make people comfortable.
The Northfield Hilton
Fitness First dining pro-
gram is a great.asset . . . but
also are its employees like
Brian Minard, Maurice
Roberts and John Doyle .. .
They, too, are a compliment
to the Northfield Hilton.
JOHN LAFFREY is
new owner of the Vineyards
with its three dining and
entertainment centers at
one locale.
Name Vineyards remains
the same, but it will revert
