Friday, August 8, 1980 25 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS VINCENZO'S Danny Raskin's LISTENING POST ABOUT 25 YEARS ago, George Bass was a Dexter bus passenger when Mathew Wolfe, also a passenger, asked him if he was Jewish . . When George said "ycs" he was invited to the Downtown Synagogue since they might need a 10th man for a mi- nyan . . . George went .. . 'nd has been an active aember ever since. The Downtown - synagogue was a dream of Isaac Agree, who wanted a place where Jews could worship regardless of their financial ability . . . or whether they were Or- thodox, Conservative or Re- form . . . When Isaac passed away, his son, Nathan, and others continued his dream . . . and in 1978, George Agree, Isaac's grandson, be- came president . . . George is still on the executive board . . . and Dr. Eugene Sloan is president. George Bass, now president emeritus, was president of the synagogue from 1964 until 1978 . . . It was during his term in office that the piesent building at 1457 Griswold was pur- chased . . . and it also was his strong object in mind that this was a place where all Jews could go to daven (pray) regardless of their status in life and ability to pay . . . It has a full-time rabbi (Rabbi Noah M. Gamze) and a cantor on Saturdays and holidays .. . There is always a full quorum for prayers every morning and evening. The people who have used the synagogue com- prise a history of Jews in Detroit for the last 50 years . . . men of wealth as well as people on welfare pray shoulder-to- shoulder toget1-: in un- ity. Joe Freedmai „ a financial adviser, acts as ritual direc- tor . . . and on abbaths, Irv- ing Palma]i and Nate Goldstick sometimes con- duct the services. The members of Downtown Synagogue have been wanting to say "Thanks" to George Bass for the so many years he has given to the shul . . . and his 75th birthday comes as a nerfect occasion . . . Oct. 5, 6 the synagogue offi- cers, board of directors and George's relatives and his many friends are giving L a birthday party at kdat Shalom Synagogue in - Farmington Hills . . . a full I course dinner . . . preceded by hors d'oeuvres . . . and open bar . . . dancing to a known orchestra . . . Happened recently dur- ing the Bloch Bnai Brith Sunday Golf League . . . on the 15th hole when Art backed his golf cart to allow partner Marty Sorkowitz more room to swing . . .
