"Concerned Citizens of
Lathrup Village" selec-
tively circulated a letter
in the city in opposition to
Akiva's use of the school.
A number of persons
consider the letter anti-
Semitic and Lobenthal
described the testimony
of the opponents before
the city council as bla-
tantly anti-Semitic.

"These people would have
supported Krystallnacht by
a vote of 7-2," Lobenthal
said. (Krystallnacht was
the Night of Broken Glass
in Germany in 1938, when
Nazi gangs destroyed
Jewish shops and
synagogues and injured
hundreds of Jews.)
Lobenthal said a number
of anti-Semitic comments
were shouted from the audi-
ence during the hearing.
One man who identified
himself as a Christian to the
city council called the meet-
ing "a sickening spectacle."
Some of the comments
"whispered" from the audi,
ence included, "We should
bring back Hitler" and

TEL AVIV (JTA) —
Former U.S. Undersecre-
tary of State Joseph Sisco,
now on a mission in the
region on behalf of the U.S.
Information Agency, said
that the military balance in
the area has changed as a
result of the Israeli-
Egyptian peace agreement
and should President
Anwar Sadat of Egypt keep
the agreement, Israel will
have one front less in case of
war.
However, the main threat
to Israel is a political one—
the deep erosion in the atti-
tude toward Israel in
Europe and the U.S.
Sisco said that something
has to be done to check this
erosion lest it weaken the
Israeli-American partner-
ship.
Sisco said he was not
happy about the lack of
coordination between Is-
raeli and American posi-
tions which was custom-

World Bank's
PLO Decision

WASHINGTON — More
than 50 U.S. Senators have
signed a letter to be sent to
World Bank president
Robert McNamara which
lauds the organization for
denying observer status to
the Palestine Liberation
Organization.
In a letter that was signed
by Senator Carl Levin ( D-
Mich.), McNamara was
lauded for denying the PLO
request to attend the up-
coming joint meeting of the
World Bank and the Inter-
national Monetary Fund.

The letter referred to fi-
nancial pressures brought
upon the two organizations
by "nations friendly to the

Richard Lobenthal, direc-
tor of the Michigan regional
office of the Anti-
Defamation League of Bnai
Brith, has charged that
Lathrup Village residents
opposed to the use of Lat-
hrup School by Akiva He-
brew Day School are bla-
tantly anti-Semitic.
Lobenthal and John E.
Jacobs, Michigan ADL
board chairman, attended a
meeting of the Lathrup Vil-
lage City Council last week.
The city council is consider-
ing approval of an occu-
pancy permit for Akiva.
Lobenthal described op-
ponents of Akiva at the
meeting as "not represent-
ing the current sentiment in
Lathrup Village. These are
holdovers from `Judenrein'
Lathrup Village. They no
longer represent the con-
sensus of the community.
But the new consensus does
not show up to be heard."
Akiva has negotiated a
five-year lease and pur-
chase option for the
school with the South-
field Board of Education.
