such as the one just put for-
ward at the special session
of the General Assembly.
That resolution was totally
unbalanced. It did not ac-
knowledge Resolution 242
as a basis for a peace settle-
ment. It did not recognize
Israel's right to exist. We
voted against it and were
pleased that a subatantial
number of other members
felt they could not support
the resolutions. Such efforts
will not bring us any closer
to peace."
"Another
principle
clearly applies to our
negotiating effort. It is this:
While negotiations are
being pursued, all of the
parties must avoid uniPat-
eral actions designed to pre-
judge the outcome of the
negotiations or that would
have the effect of worsening
the atmosphere for suc-
cessful negotiations. No
negotiations can succeed if
one of the parties at the
table attempts simultane-
ously to gain unilateral ad-
vantage on the ground."
"If the parties should
fail, or if the Camp David
process should be de-
railed by misguided in-
tervention, the conse-
quences could be serious
indeed. For the interests
of the entire world are
deeply engaged in the
Middle East. Continuing
conflicts in the region
threaten those interests,
threaten the future of our
friends in the region,
threaten intervention by
outside powers — and

threaten the peace of the tions.

Under questioning by the manding Israel withdraw

Europe Move Toward PLO
Protested to Local Consuls
In response to a recent
declaration by European
Common Market nations
calling for the "association"
of the PLO in the current
Mideast peace negotiations,
Marian Shifman, president
of the Jewish Community
Council of Metropolitan De-
troit, has sent letters of pro-
test to several Common
Market countries with con-
sulates in the Detroit area.
Calling the European
declaration ". . an un-
seemly accommodation to
the PLO policy of ter-
rorism," Mrs. Shifman's let-
ters went to local consuls
representing France, West
Germany and Italy. Since
Great Britain does not
maintain a consular office
in Detroit, a similar letter
was sent to their embassy in
Washington.
Expressing the view
that the action by the
Common Market nations
detracted from rather
than enhanced changes
for a peace settlement,
Mrs. Shifman stated, "It
appears to us to be a flag-
rant and somewhat
shameful capitulation to
the intransigent and re-
jectionies policies of oil-
rich Arab nations."
"The Camp David process
has proven to be the only
successful negotiating ef-
fort in recent Middle East
history. The action by your
government(s) in this mat-
ter can only serve to under-
mine and impede the search
for realistic solutions . . ."
Nashville Jews
Have Higher
Affiliation Rate
NASHVILLE — Nashvil-
le's Jewish community has
a higher affiliation rate
than the nation's Jews as a
whole, according to prelimi-
nary findings just released
of a Jewish Family Life
Survey administered by the
Nashville unit of the
American Jewish Commit-
tee.
Some 92 percent of those
sampled were found to be
affiliated with a Nashville
synagogue and 72 percent
affiliated with other Jewish
organizations including
their synagogue.
Nashville:s Jewish par-
ents clearly feel, the survey
found, that the most effec-
tive transmitter of .Jewish-
ness to their children has
been the influence of a
Jewish home. A strong
majority reportedly feels
that providing "a solid
Jewish education" by par-
ents to their children was of
greatest importance to
them as parents in prepar-
ing their children for a
Jewish life
In his speech before the
voting, Blum said that Is-
rael rejects the resolu-
tions and the entire spe-
cial emergency session of
the General Assembly
because it was "illegal
and preposterous." Blum
declared that "while it
(the special session) has
not advanced the cause
of peace, it has dealt au-
other blow to what re-
mains of the UN's
prestige and authority."
He noted that there are
many problems in the world
and observed 'that it is "no
panacea to the world's illE
by advocating hostile, one-
sided resolutions against
my country." He said the
resolutions were aimed at
destroying the peace talks
which, he declared, will go
on.
