The shofar is blown in the synagogue every weekday morning during the month preceding Rosh Hashana for a variety of reasons. Generally, these days are considered serious days be- cause they precede the proc- ess of judgment which takes place annually at Rosh Hashana. The shofar, then, would be considered (as Maimonides) as a stimulus to awaken the people to pre- pare for the period of judg- ment. It seems that these were originally fast days and a shofar was usually sounded on fast days. Later on, when fasting became difficult for many, the days were days of solemnity and the shofar is blown to remind the people that these were originally fast days and times for serious thinking which would lead to repentance. It is also claimed that these were the days when Moses went up on Mount Sinai a second time (i.e., after the Jews sinned by making the golden calf). When he first left the people to climb the mountain a shofar was sounded. Blowing the shofar for this whole month today re- minds us of this historic moment, telling us that in the case•of Moses the days . lead to the forgiveness of the people as we hope the days in our time before the New Year will do likewise. The sources deduce this practice from an expression in the holy Book of Psalms where it is written: "Sound the shofar at the month at the designated time for the day of our festival" (Psalms 81:4).
