Friday, August 1, 1980 5 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 99-Year Language War Is Continuing in Israel (Continued from Page 1) reviving the ancient lan- guage: "Whoever wants to write something of wisdom and science, and especially someone like myself, who speaks He- brew at home with his children about every- thing in life, feels, every moment, a lack of words, without which living speech cannot take place." Because of the limitations of biblical Hebrew, with its 8,000 words, Ben-Yehuda and a number of other scholars went to other sources — the Hebrew poets and Aramaic writings, such as the Talmud — to find terms that could be adapted to the realities of the period. They also began coining new words on the basis of the ancient writings. Thus, they started the process which has led to the expan- sion of the Hebrew lan- guage to its current vocab- ulary of 80,000 words. The limitations of the language and the need to create new words led to a lack of consistency, For in- Doihi—Hospital sympathy FRUIT BASKETS '3-Times Daily :: Nation-Wide •:: Delivery $ 1695 RODNICK- •• McINERNEY'S *779-4140 772-4350 • 6.0 0.0%. BIRMINGHAM * MI 2-4150 mathematics stance, teachers in different parts of Jewish Palestine would make up different terms for expressing the same idea. So students transferring from one school to another could not understand their teachers. This problem led to the creation of the Hebrew Language Board (later renamed Academy) for coining new words and for confirming ones that had been established. Among the thousands of words it has coined or confirmed are words like "ramzor," an abbrevia- tion of the two words "ramaz or" (signal light), BEN-YEHUDA "sofshavua" or (weekend). Thus ancient Hebrew words are used in a new way to express today's concepts. Then there are the foreign words, which have been absorbed in to the lan- guage, (even including the verb "leflartate," which is conjugation of the EnglishV word to flirt) or the word "puncture." It originally meant a hole in a bicycle tire. But it has come to mean anything that has gone wrong. The word be- came so entrenched in the language that when the academy coined a new word for a hole in a tire, "teker," the Israeli was able to say, "I had a puncture, a teker in my tire." Hebrew seems to be doing quite well as the national language, to judge from the million Israelis who re- cently visited the Hebrew Book Week exhibitions all over the country. Prof. Rabin believes that as Hebrew develops to meet the realities of the 20th and 21st Centuries, it will change very rapidly. He maintains that the only reason Israelis can under- stand the Bible more easily than Englishmen can understand Chaucer, is that Hebrew was a dead lan- guage for 1,700 years and was revived on the basis of the ancient writings. (Editor's note: Roy Janes is the national staff coach for the American Youth Soccer Organiza- tion and head coach of the American Soccer League's California Sun- shine Youth Team.) Once in a while, a book appears which entertains, informs and also has lasting value. The World's #1 Best Selling Soccer Book," the only major sports book writ- ten by children, is clearly such a book. It is well-organized, com- plete, accurate, warm, con- versational, enticing, ab- sorbing and attractively illustrated. Addressed to both girls and boys, ages 7 through 14 (and their par- ents and coaches), its goals are to interest the young player in soccer as a sport and as a social activity, to motivate the young player to master basic skills, and finally to serve as a textbook on skills and tac- tics. It does all these well and in just the right combi- nation to make it a classic among children's sports books. ?am — atia caste pa AT GLASSMAN OLDSMOBILE... "WE WONT SELL YOU A CAR . They also have an earned reputation as very dedicated, skilled and intelligent soccer players. Just a few years ago, Ken began his soccer career as a small and un- coordinated beginner in a world that appeared to be populated by "skilled giants." Soon Steve fol- lowed. Through steady practice, they became accomplished players. Their experiences in soccer includes 600 league games on 40 differ- ent' teams, plus more than 3,000 supervised practice hours with their coaches. Ken and Steve have each played on two state cham- pionship teams and have earned numerous trophies and awards. Also, in 1975, Steve won the California State Championship for in- dividual skills in the Na- tional Skills Competition. Since they had gained so much from soccer, the Laitin brothers wanted to relate their experiences to other young players. They began by teaching their lit- tle sister, Lindy, then age 9, and other children the skills of soccer. Shortly thereaf- ter, Lindy was elected to her Region's All-Star team. "Whatever worked on teaching Lindy and the other kids, we put into the book." The Laitins' describe their feelings as beginning players and the problems that all new players face with self, teammates, oppo- nents, officials, coahces and parents. Mature affection, horn- age, devotion, does not eas- ily express itself. Its voice is low. It is modest and retir- ing, it lays in ambush and waits. Such is the mature fruit. Sometimes a life glides away, and finds it still ripening in the shade. The light inclinations of very young people are as dust compared to rocks. — Dickens Their directions and guidance for mastering skills such as shooting, heading, passing, trap- ping, dribbling, tackling and goal-keeping are amazingly clear and easy to follow. They explain not only what to do, but why. Their step-by-step de- scriptions for techniques follow the thought patterns of any kid as he or she ap- proaches the ball. The book encourages and guides self-practice which is so necessary for every player's development. The Laitins' discussion of kick-offs, goal kicks, corner kicks, throw- ins, free kicks and other team tactics and team plays rounds out their very com- plete, sensible and effective course in soccer. 10MEGA AUTHORIZED SALES & REPAIRS ( , S ) George Ohrenstein Jewelers Ltd.
