NEW YORK (JTA) —
The Memorial Foundation
for Jewish Culture reported
that its board of trustees,
consisting of leaders and
representatives of 50 inter-
national and national cul-
tural and communal organ-
izations throughout the
world, voted at its annual
meeting in Amsterdam an
overall sum of $1,585,000
for allocations to various
cultural grant programs of
the Memorial Foundation.
Nearly 2,000 applications
from institutions and indi-
viduals of five continents
and 16 countries had been
submitted for the academic
year of 1980-1981, accord-
ing to the Foundation. Of
these, 600 plus received
favorable action.
Almost 200 grants were
designated for projects in
the areas of Jewish research
and publication, Jewish
studies at colleges and uni-
versities and the documen-
tation and commemoration
of the Holocaust.
A similar number of
Doctoral Scholarships
and Fellowships went for
the preparation of future
Judaic and post-rabbinic
scholars as well as for
Jewish educators, re-
search specialists,
writers and artists, the
Foundation reported.
In addition, more than
200 grants were made for
the support of the Founda-
tion's special professional
program to help train

spiritual leaders, teachers,
communal workers and
other personnel for future
service in isolated and/or
culturally needy com-
munities in various parts of
the Jewish world, particu-
larly those impacted by the
Holocaust. Nahum
Goldmann was re-elected
president of the foundation.

141 Settlements
in Last 3 Years

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The Jewish Agency and the
World Zionist Organization
have established 141 new
settlements in the last three
years. Matitzahu Drobless,
co-chairman of the WZO's
Settlement Department re-
ported at a meeting of the
WZO Executive.
According to Drobless, it
is the greatest settlement
drive in Zionist history."
Only 22 of the 141 settle-
ments are immigrant set-
tlements, he said.
Drobless reported that
the settlement plans of
seven-groups of new immig-
rants have been delayed by
financial difficulties. He
also contended that the IL 2
billion ($40 million) allo-
cated by the Housing and
Construction Ministry this
year for the new settle-
ments is insufficient to
cover their needs.
The Executive deferred
further discussion of set-
tlement problems to a later
session.
