Klan Leader Splits Organization

NEW YORK — David
Duke, who has resigned as
grand wizrad of the Knights
of the Ku Klux Klan, will
continue Klan-type activi-
ties without robes or hoods,
according to the Anti-
Defamation League of Bnai
Brith.
Duke, one of the nation's
major Klan leaders and a
former associate of the
American Nazi Party, has
announced that he intends
to form a new organization
known as the National
Association for the Ad-
vancement of White People,
ADL said.
"David Duke has evi-
denced no change in the ra-
cial and religious bigotry he
has advocated throughout
his career in the Ku Klux K
an and even earlier when he
wore the swastika."
Justin J. Finger, direc-
tor of ADL's Civil Rights
Division, said the resig-
nation of the Louisiana-
based Klan leader will
end an era of KKK "de-
ception" in which a
spurious image of Klan
respectability was proj-
ected in the person of the
nattily dressed, pseudo-
intellectual David Duke."
With Duke's departure
and his organization in dis-
array, Finger said, it is
likely that his longtime
rival and former lieutenant,
Bill Wilkinson, imperial
wizrad of the Invisible Em-
pire, Knights of the Ku
Klux Klan, also based in
Louisiana, will move closer
to center stage in nation-
wide Klan activities.
"Wilkinson," Finger said,
"unlike Duke, makes no ef-
fort to camouflage his
hatred of blacks, Jews, His-
panics and other minorities,
nor does he attempt to cover
up the raw image of the
Klansman as a hooded,
gun-brandishing bigot."
In suggesting reasons for
Duke's resignation, Finger
listed the following:
• His organization was
disintegrating.
The
California branch has
dropped out. Texas is
considering leaving and
a segment of the Alabama
organization has joined
the Wilkinson organiza-
tion. Karl Hand, Duke's
own national organizer,
furthermore, has res-

Anderson Tells
of Link to Ball

"Near East Report"
clarifies a question posed in
last week's Jewish News
"Purely Commentary" con-
cerning the report that
Presidential candidate
John Anderson was being
advised by George Ball on
foreign policy.
According_ to Near East
Report:
"Asked about his associa-
tion with former Under Sec-
retary of State George Ball,
an anti-Israel foreign policy
specialist who has endorsed
his candidacy, Anderson
said, 'I certainly do not
agree with his views in that
regard and we have agreed
to disagree on matters in-
volving the Middle East.' "

igned with a sharp attack
on Duke. As a result, the
Knights of the Ku Klux
Klan now has an esti-
mated membership of
only - 1,000 to 1,200
nationwide, a decline
from ADL's November
1979 estimate of 1,500 to
2,000;
• The media has grown
increasingly indifferent to
him and there were fewer
opportunities for him to be
interviewed by the press

and on TV;
• Some of his members
have expressed the view
that Duke is arrogant,
egotistical and a poor or-
ganizer, and one of Duke's
former grand dragons
raised questions concerning
his handling of funds;
• Duke's
planned
Presidential candidacy,
which was to have been the
major KKK activitiy of
1980, "never got off the
ground."
