The novel depicts the
medical school, subsequent
training and work of a
physician who does general
practice for many years.
Sensitively engaged with
his patients, he decides to
become a psychiatrist-
psychoanalyst. The doctor
probes and confesses what
made him decide to become
a physician and then a
psychiatrist.
Many of the chapters of
the novel, occurring after
the physician's specializa-
