TEL AVIV Engineer
Josef Wahaba of Haifa
wishes to restore his "lost
honor." He was born 67
years ago in Egypt. As an
adult his Egyptian citizen-
ship was cancelled by a spe-
cial decree of the Egyptian
Interior Ministry. His pos-
sessions were confiscated
and he was expelled from
Egypt after he and his
brothers were accused of
Zionist underground work
indermine the Egyptian
,ime.
Wahaba still does not ac-
cept this decree, and since
his expulsion from his
homeland after the Suez
Campaign in 1956 he has
continued to try to restore
his honor. Ever since the
signing of the Israeli-
Egyptian Peace Treaty he
stopped his endeavors
through international
agencies and began turning
directly to the Israeli
Foreign Office and to Egyp-
tian personalities visiting
Israel.
He also appealed to the

Egyptian ambassador in Is-
rael, Said Murtada.
The Egyptians offered
him a cash settlement but
Wahaba rejected this pro-
posal. "I only wish to restore
my honor," he stated. "I de-
mand my Egyptian citizen-
ship back. I was born in
Egypt and the annulment of
my citizenship was illegal. I
also demand an official
apology for all my- suffer-
ings when I was accused,
without any foundation, of
spying for Israel."
Josef Wahaba is of
course very much in-
terested in the develop-
ment of relations be-
tween Israel and Egypt.
He reads all the Israeli
and Egyptian newspap-
ers about this subject.
When he recently saw in
the Israeli Yediot
Achranot newspaper a
photograph of the Israeli
embassy building in
Cairo, he jumped up and
shouted: "This is my
house ... my lot ... my
plan ..."
"The embassy building
stands on my lot, which was
part of my possessions con-
fiscated by the Egyptian
authorities," he said. He
showed me the building
plans which had been sub-
mitted to the authorities
and he said that only a few
alterations were made.
Wahaba told us there was
a shortage of houses in
Egypt at the time. The
Engineers Organization
planned then an "Engineers
City and I bought a lot of
627 square meters and pre-
pared my own building
plan. My file received the
number 8906. After that I
fenced in the lot and started
to prepare the ground for
building. I was suddenly ar-
rested and later expelled
from Egypt."
Wahaba was officially
recognized in Israel as a
"Prisoner of Zion."
Wahaba found out that
The gift of gaiety may
itself be the greatest good
fortune, and the most seri-
ous step toward maturity.

his lot was transferred after
his expulsion to the Egyp-
tian custodian of property of
missing persons. Wahaba
emphatically states: "I did
not leave Egypt by my own
will. I was expelled by force.
After investigations under
torture, I was put on a ship
which was on its way to
France."
Wahaba learned that
the Israeli Embassy pays
a yearly rent of $60,000.
"They should not pay
anything," he said. "This
is my possession and I am
ready to let it without any
payment."
Wahaba made this pro-
posal to the Israeli Foreign
Ministry in Jerusalem.
They thanked him for his
generous offer and it was
transferred to the Israeli
Ministry of Justice, which
will deal with the matter.

Energy Test
TEL AVIV — A new solar
cell simulator, developed by
Tel Aviv University Prof.
Joseph Appelbaum, enables
accurate, relatively inex-
pensive evaluation of solar
electrical system perform-
ance, without requiring in-
stallation of a complete
solar system and purchase
of expensive solar cells.
To assess the needs of fac-
tories, national parks, vil-
lages, military camps, re-
sort areas, shopping cen-
ters, or apartment com-
plexes distant from conven-
tional electrical power grids
who are considering going
solar for their power, solar
equipment research and
production firms could use
this new apparatus to de-
termine how much solar
electric energy is available
during various periods and
under various conditions
and compare this energy
input data with the proj-
ected requirements.
