THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Baseball's Rosen Inducted Into Jewish Hall of Fame LOS, ANGELES (JTA) — Al Rosen, former star third basement for the Cleveland Indians, was inducted into the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame Sunday night in Be- verly Hills by the general manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Al Campanis. The induction took place at the second annual dinner called an "Evening of Jewish Pridell" which was attended by 400 people. "At no time have I been so deeply moved as I have been this evening to be recog- nized a Jew by Jews," said Rosen who was president of the New York Yankees when they won their first World Championship of the seventies. Ten other persons were also inducted last night. They are: Mel Allen, Isaac Berger, Lillian Barney Copeland, Marshall Dreyfuss, Eddie Goldberg, Gottlieb, Harry Litwack, Ron Nix, Lon Myers, and a special commemorative was presented to Gretel Bergmann, who was a Jewish athlete in Nazi Germany and was denied a chance to participate in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. The Jewish Sports Hall of Fame is a project of the United States Committee Sports for Israel, sponsors of the U.S. team in Israel's Maccabia Games. I By RABBI MARC H. TANENBAUM (A Seven Arts Feature) • Was it worth all the effort to try to change the anti- Semitic character of the Oberammergau Passion Play? A series of recent de- velopments both in Ger- many and in the United States argue that the effort to revise the 1980 produc- tion has in fact resulted in a number on quite substan- tial positive developments. First, a survey of the West German press, radio, and TV just completed by the American Jeivish Commit- tee discloses that there has been "a virtually unanim- ous repudiation of the anti- Jewish ideas and images in the Oberammergau Passion Play by the most influential public opinion media in Germany." Thus, for example, the influential "Sued- deutsche Zeitung" of Munich criticized "the people of Oberammergau for not wanting to under- stand the charge of anti- Semitism, else, they might have learned what the critics were trying to do; not to accuse the vil- lagers of anti-Semitism, but to show how this and other Passion Plays em- body an old anti-Jewish tradition within Chris- tianity." Literally dozens of arti- cles and radio and TV dis- cussions in this vein suggest that a major educational achievement in combatting anti-Semitism has been realized throughout Ger- many. Simi- larly, the Administration has moved towards selling offensive sub-systems to another nation for use on its F-15s, sub-systems which only two years ago the Ad- ministration promised the Congress it would not sell. "Neither country heeded our call to join negotiations with Israel. Both condemned the Egypt-Israel peace treaty, and broke rela- tions with Egypt, and joined a campaign to boycott Egypt eco- nomically and politically. Both talk of tests of America's relationship with them, yet both have failed tests which the American people would have expected any sup- portive friend to meet easily. Why can't we de- mand reciprocity? Mr. Speaker, the Ad- ministration should be aware that it cannot stabilize an unstable Mid- dle East, or blunt Soviet ad- venturism, or compensate for a weakened American naval presence, or secure steady oil supplies by pressuring Israel or by cur- rying favor with rejectionist states. "In today's situation, we must identify our interests and our friends, and defend them. Our support for Israel is seen throughout the world as the litmus test of America's commitments abroad. We can abuse Israel only at severe risk to the peace process and to our own reputation. We must hold out the hand of friend- ship to all, but not out of fear and intimidation.
