ments)" and not "to die by
them."
The Commandments,
such as the Sabbdth, were
designed to improve and
continue life and not to de-
stroy life.
Another reason often
quoted is that while one
Sabbath may be violated to
save the life, many more
Sabbaths may be observed
by this living person (Yoma
85b).
