calling condo conversions a
serious problem confronting
renters, particularly senior
citizens, is working on a
series dbills to regulate the
conversion of con-
dominiums.
In a "Legislative Report"
sent to his sonstituents,
Forbes said:
"Of major interest is
House Bill 5227, which es-
tablishes a life-time lease'
for renters 65 years or older,
who currently reside in
apartment buildings which
are in the process of conver-
sion or face future conver-
sion.
"The bill would revamp
and streamline the licens-
ing procedures for de-
velopers without lessen-
ing protection for current
renters and potential
buyers, and would re-
quire them to give notice
and specific information
about the conversion
project to tenants or any-
one interested in pur-
chasing a unit.
"Another major provision
is contained in House Bill
5580, which would establish
a loan program through the
Michigan Housing De-
velopment Authority for
developers who have al-
ready purchased apartment
buildings for the purpose of
converting them in to con-
dominiums, and who would
be required to provide 'life-
time lease' options to qual-
ifying tenants.
"The bills are currently
under consideration in the
House. House Bills 5227
and 5580 have recently
