There were very in- teresting and successful presentations, planned and sponsored by the city of Vienna under the leader- ship of Prof. Helmut Zilk. Among the festival's par- ticipating artists were Rafael Kubelik and Zubin Mehta, both conductors and devoted friends of the Is- raeli Philharmonic Or- chestra. Rosalyn Tureck, the leading Bach interpreter in the United States, made her debut in Vie- nna and received ova- tions. Bruno Leonardo Gelber scored as soloist with the Zurich Or- chestra. Only a few years ago a Russian woman musician emigrated to Vienna; today Elisabeth Leonskaja is the declared favorite pianist in Au- stria and featured at all the festivals. The violinist Gidon Kre- mer, who will appear next season with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, came from Riga and was the mas- ter student of the late David Oistrach. Kremer and his wife Elena, a youth- ful, charming but most effi- cient pianist, played to- gether in a concert, that ended with a long lasting applause. Zwi Zeitlin, another vio- linist, formerly from Israel and presently professor at the Eastman College of Music, successfully played the rarely heard violin con- certo by Arnold Schoenberg. There also was a world Ptemiere of an opera, called "Jesus' Wedding." Many weeks before its perform- ance the title and subject matter of the opera was•ro- tested.
