The experimental project uses sunshine as its main energy source rather than electricity, as most other systems do. After extracting the chemicals (which have traditionally been man- ufactured from petroleum through costly processes), the residue has been found to be very rich in protein that can be used in place of soya bean and fish meal for animal feeding purposes. According to Dr. Zvy Dubinsky, who heads the project, the new system — in which algal culture does not compete with conven- tional agriculture for water and fertilizer — "may be economically competitive with other land uses in hot, arid countries. In addition, it can prove to be an impor- tant way for Israel and other countries to save cur- rency now being spent on imported animal feed." Emunah Women to Open Geriatric Nursing School NEW YORK — In re- sponse to the shortage of qualified personnel in the area of geriatric nursing care in Israel, Emanah Women of America will open a school for geriatric nursing in September as part of the new Emunah Women of America Com- munity College in Jerusalem. The "Sally and Alta Sol- omon School for Geriatric Nursing," is a project of Emnah Women in conjunc- tion with Shaare Zedek Hospital, where students- wil do field work and prac- tice internships. Yeshiva Grads from Diverse Backgrounds NEW YORK — A former nun from Anchorage, Alaska, a legPlly blind rabbi from Oberlin, Ohio, and an ex-United States Army Corps Sergeant and Holocaust survivor engaged in relocation of elderly Jews in Brooklyn's Brownsville section are among the 55 students who will be graduated from Yeshiva University's Wurzweiler School of Social Work (WSSW) on Aug. 1. According to WSSW Dean Lloyd Setleis, the students, who are from 17 states, in addition to Canada and Is- rael, are part of WSSW's "Block Education Pro- gram." The heart will commonly govern the head; and any strong passion, set the wrong way, will soon in- fatuate even the wisest of men; therefore the first part , of wisdom is to watch the affections. Waterland Ruling on Quotas Upsets the ADL NEW YORK — The Anti-Defamation League of Bnai Brith has called the July 2 U.S. Supreme Court decision upholding racial quotas in awarding public works contracts a blow to the "basic American princi- ple of non-discrimination." ADL had filed an amicus (friend of the court) brief in the case. "The decision sanctions governmental involvement in the unconscionable prac- tice of fitting Americans and their business enterprises into racial and ethnic categories by grant- ing or withholding benefits to individuals based on race or ethnicity," the ADL said.
