liE MY GUEST

The Best of Everything

IF YOU LOOK AT the
menu, you'll see Dinty
Moores, hamburgers,
corned beef, lobster tail,
turkey, etc. . . . but don't be
deceived . . . an old restau-
rant has now become an al-
together new one.
Remember Point After
Deli? . . . It's no more . . .
The new name, additional
owners and selection of food
make up what is probably,
the only eatery of its kind in
the Midwest.
House Of Hunan on W. 12
Mile Rd. and Northwestern,
in the Racquetime Bldg., is
as different as night and day
. . . The luncheon menu still
has eggs and delicatessen
. . . but is combined with
Mandarin and Cantonese
dining.
In the evening, some deli
is available, but who would
want this when a three-
page menu offers abotit 100
authentic Mandarin and
Cantonese dishes . . . many
of which cannot be gotten
anywhere else.
Hunan is a province of
China .. . and its food is
spiced between that of
Mandarin and Szechuan .. .
This is why, if you've never
had Hunan or Mandarin
food, it is very wise to
specify that you do not want
it spiced too much .. . How-
ever, if you've got a good
stomach and asbestos
tongue, you'll love the Man-
darin dishes . . . If not, play
it safe and enjoy the Can-
tonese which is hardly
spiced.
House of Huhan is a din-
ing experience in Oriental
epicurean cooking . . . It is
now owned by Joe and Jen-
nie Chue, formerly of New
Peking, who run the
kitchen . . . and Henry and
Suzie Dong, who take care
of the floor management.
There were four of us .. .
and our waiter, Dale Dong,
a jazz enthusiast sax man as
well as a very pleasant and
polite young University of
Michigan graduate,
brought on the feast . . . Hot
and Sour Soup for two of us
and Won Ton for two others
. . . Pu Pu Platter (barbecue
beef on skewers, egg rolls,.
fantail shrimp, barbecue
ribs, foil-wrapped barbecue
shrimp, rumaki) . . . Shelled
Prawns in a hot spicy sauce
. . . Hunan sliced Beef, dou-
ble style Chicken (small
chewables made with oyster
sauce and with corn starch),
crispy Whole Pickerel with
an elegant sweet and sour
but not spicy sauce . . . and
dessert of sugar spun apples
in which Joe brings a bowl
of ice water to the table and
dips in the apples . . . They
come out tasting like candy
apples . . . only much better.
Joe is a true artist in de-
corating his dishes . . . The
presentation of each entree
is magnificently done with
decorative garnishments
you won't see anywhere. In
the kitchen is also Chef
Koa, brought here from
New York where he is noted
for his fine Mandarin cook-
ing.
House of Hunan seats 190

in booths and tables . . . It's
only been open two weeks
. . . and folks don't have to
order from the menu .. .
Anything they want, Joe
will make.
The new menu has three
important notes . . . "1. All
of our dishes are individu-
ally cooked to order in the
traditional Chinese way.
Some of the dishes require
longer cooking. If you have
limited time, please let our
manager know and we will
cooperate. 2. If, for medical
reasons, you cannot eat cer-
tain foods, i.e. salt, fat,
M.S.G. (of which we use a
very small amount), please
let us know and we will pay
special attention to your
dishes. 3. All the dishes can
be specially prepared to re-
spect your religious faith
(such as vegetable dishes,
etc.")
Also, stars are in front of
items where people should
specify whether or not they
want the food heavily spiced
. . . There are also Can-
tonese dinner combinations
and Mandarin dinner com-
binations.
