Anderson Reiterates Support for Israel
Following Visits to Middle East, Europe
BONN (JTA) — On the
last leg of his tour in West
Germany and before leav-
ing for a visit in France the
Independent candidate for
President of the United
States, Rep. John A
/ nderson,
reiterated his support for Is-
rael, and stressed that he
will definitely be a
Presidential candidate
through the elections on
Nov. 4.
In an interview with
political cartoonist Raanan
Lurie published Wednesday
in the German Die Welt,
Anderson observed that
even President Sadat of
Egypt said he could see
some justification of settle-
ments on the West Bank
that very clearly related to
security needs of Israel, and
that he, Anderson, accepts
that approach.
Anderson added that he
sees no reason why 14,000
Israeli settlers could not
live peacefully side-by 7side
with the Arabs. The inde-
pendent candidate for
President said that during
his visit to Israel he clearly
gained the impression that
the Labor Party is much
more flexible about territo-
rial concessions to the
Arabs than Begin.
It's not true. The Republicans did
not choose Detroit just to be
here during Osmuns July Clearance."
No one would blame them, of course. The values
are sensational. But all parties are welcome at
Osmuns. We're very democratic.

JOHN ANDERSON
While in Israel, Ander-
son met Israeli opposi-
tion leaders to hear how
they would approach the
problems of Middle East
peace if they were re-
turned to power.
Shimon Peres, the Labor
Party leader, said that the
opposition would not
change its stand on Israel's
insistence on controlling
Arab East Jerusalem.
Anderson delighted his
Israeli hosts when he de-
nounced the Palestine Lib-
eration Organization and
declared that U.S. pressure
on Israel was no way to
achieve peace.
Earlier, the Republican
Congressman from Il-
linois, who was on a
four-day visit to Israel,
told reporters that the
U.S. should ban arms
sales to Arab countries
which refuse to copera-
fion in the peace Process.
Anderson was the guest of
honor at a dinner given by
Justice Minister Shmuel
Tamir on behalf of the gov-
ernment at the King David
Hotel,- In the course of his
speech he called on those
who believe that the PLO
has moderated its position
to provide proof of that.
"After what happened at
Misgav Am and Hebron,
and following El Fatah's
reaffirmation of its charter
calling for the dissolution of
the state of Israel, the bur-

more difficult," he said.
He took exception to
statements by American
politicians — an apparent
reference to the likely GOP
Presidential nominee,
Ronald Reagan — that Is-
rael is an "asset" to the U.S.
This, he claimed, was offen-
sive because "an asset was
an object to be manipulated,
to be used, to be handled for
the convenience of others."
Anderson preferred the
term "valued strategic
partner" for the U.S. and to
safeguard Western inter-
ests.
He also took an indirect
swipe at the Carter Ad-
ministration when he
said peace in the Middle
East could not be
achieved either by exert-
ing pressure on Israel or
creating tension between
the U.S. and Israel.
He reaffirmed his support
for the Camp David accords,
deplored those who belittled
the Egyptian-Israeli peace
treaty and stressed "the
immense regard America
has for President (Anwar)
Sadat's courage and bold-
ness in seeking a settlement
with Israel."
Following meetings with
Israeli leaders, Anderson
told reporters that the U.S.
is "giving away a card if we
engage in unrestricted sales
of arms to Arab countries
without getting come con-
cessions first, such as that
they will cooperate in an ef-
fort to achieve Middle East
peace and indicate a
willingness to join the U.S.,
Egyptian, Israeli (au-
tonomy) discussions now
under way."
He also castigated the
West European nations for
saying at their summit con-
ference• in Venice last
month that the PLO should
become a party to the
Mideast peace talks.
After meeting with
Foreign Minister Yitzhak
Shamir, Anderson said
he was now more confi-
dent than ever that Israel
is dedicated to seeing a
successful conclusion to
the Palestinian au-
tonomy negotiations."
Anderson toured the
West Bank and visited the
Jewish settlement of Maale
Adumim. Meanwhile,
Mayor Elias Freij of
Bethlehem declared that he
would not meet the Ameri-
can Presidential hopeful be-
cause he supports Israeli
policies of settlement and
annexation and is ignorant
of Palestinian rights.
Freij said he had been ap-
proached by Anderson aides
to try to arrange a meeting.
Anderson got a similar snub
from King Hussein of Jor-
dan.
Palestinian Plots to Kill
Sharon, Khalid Are Foiled
TEL AVIV (JTA) — Secu-
rity forces have arrested
four Arabs from the Gaza
Strip and charged them
with a plot to assassinate Is-
raeli Agriculture Minister
Ar-iel Sharon at his farm in
the Negev. The four repor-
tedly confessed they were
recruited for the task by the
Palestine Liberation
Organization.
Sharon was apparently-,
chosen because he is in
charge of the Ministerial
Settlement Committee and
is the leading advocate in
the Cabinet of increasing
Jewish settlements in the
West Bank.
The terrorists had appar-
ently been planning the at-
tack for a year. They had
people working in packing
houses near the Sharon
farm where they could ob-
serve his habits.
According to reports,
the four men arrested
had planned to get jobs as
farmhands on Sharon's
farm. The terrorists had
earlier stockpiled arms
near one of the fruit-
packing plants. They re-
portedly planned to at-
tack the minister with
explosives and firearms
while he was in his house
thus circumventing his
bodyguard and the elec-
tronic warning devices
which surround the farm.
In a related incident, a
plot to assassinate Saudi
Arabia's King Khalid dur-
ing his visit to West Ger-
many was foiled.
A conspiracy to seize a
Copenhagen hotel and kill a
flight crew from the El Al
Israel Airlines, allegedly
planned by Palestinian ter-
rorists, also was quashed.
Reports from Sweden
said police held three
people on arms smuggl-
ing charges and sus-
pected involvement in
the assassination plot
against Khalid. The two
men and a woman were
arrested June 20 when
they tried to enter Swe-
den from Denmark at the
southwest port of Hel-
singborg with a cache of
arms.
All are Swedish citizens,
but the men are of Palesti-
nian origin, Swedish news-
paper reported.
