Today Kibutz Lavi is the largest manufacturer of synagogue furniture in Is- rael, and also exports to Au- stralia, the U.S., Holland and Belgium. It has fur- nished some 30 synagogues throughout the world, as well as about 450 synagogues and institu- tions in Israel itself. Production manager and design engineer is Moshe Devere, a genial kibutznik who came from the U.S. in 1966. Although he had no formal experience, he be- came proficient with on- . the job training as well as The Premiere Detroit Performance of ISRAEL'S Kiryat Ono Youth Band in Concert reading extensively all the latest technological litera- ture and taking special courses from time to time. The enterprise has re- cently been branching out into contemporary furni- ture but this will always be secondary to Lavi's spe- cialty, synagogue furniture. The factory, operated by 30 workers, is a big com- plex, of which Moshe De- vere is justly proud, T' noise level is high, and the workers wear earmuffs as they operate enormous automated lathes, planers, drills and routers. The machinery is the latest available including a Savi guillotine cutter imported from Denmark and a San- dingmaster from Holland. Most of the lumber used in the benches is beech, im- ported from Yugoslavia. It is a hard wood with an at- tractive grain, and is One of the few types of wood avail- able that people can still af- ford to buy, as it costs half the price of teak or oak. The factory boasts a large kiln in which lumber is dried for several weeks. This makes the wood hyd- roscopically balanced for the Israel climate. The end products can then be used in synagogues as, far apart as on the coast or in the middle of the desert, with no chance of the wood cracking or warping. A unique electronic Blue- ing process further guaran- tees the durability of the product. The factory, which con- centrates on synagogue and yeshiva benches and lec- terns, brings in artisans and craftsmen from outside the kibutz for special jobs. Every effort is made to ensure that the furniture is strong, comfortable and aesthetically pleasing, be- fitting a house of worship. Any design can be made to order to client's specifica- tions and, in conjunction with an architect or interior designer, to suit the specific needs of a congregation. Before accepting an or- der, a representative of the factory always visits the synagogue to discuss the de- sign of the furniture. The result — worshippers in 500 synagogues all over the Jewish world are witness to the beauty and durability of furniture produced 135 Kibutz Lavi in the hills of Galilee. • Sunday, August 10, 1980 8:00 p.m. Open to the Public Temple Beth Tickets: $5.00 per person El — Helen L.
