Orthodox Meet
Cater on the
Jerusalem Issue

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
Orthodox Jewish leaders
from 12 states stressed to
Carter Administration offi-
cials last week that "the
status of Jerusalem is not
negotiable, and must not be
included among the various
bargaining elements of the
peace process."
The 125 Jewish leaders
were in Washington for a
day of meetings at the
White House and State De-
partment with officials, in-
cluding Vice President Wal-
ter Mondale, Zbigniew
Brzezinski, the President's
Assistant for National Se-
curity Affairs, and Harold
Saunders, Assistant Secre-
tary for Near East, and
South Asian Affairs.
Agudath Israel of
America sponsored the
event.

Soviet Jewish
Activist Jailed

NEW YORK (JTA) —
Valery Pilnikov, a Soviet
Jewish activist from Kiev,
has been sentenced to five
years of hard labor, accord-
ing to the National Confer-
ence on Soviet Jewry. He
was tried for allegedly as-
saulting his neighbor.
Pilnikov was arrested
May 16 upon his return
from Moscow where he and
a group of Soviet Jews from
his home city delivered a
complaint to the Com-
munist Party Central
Committee regarding new
emigration restrictions.
The trial was held with-
out legal-representation for
Pilnikov and despite writ-
ten evidence clearing him of
all charges.
