THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, July 11,.1980 5 Ronald Reagan the GOP Candidate Has Max Fisher as Advocate Max M. Fisher has already entered Ronald Reagan's portals and has become one of the chief adherents of the Republican candidate for President. On the occasion of the Republican National Conven- tion he expressed his views in thin statement he has written for The Detroit Jewish News while attending the sessions of the Jewish Agency for Israel in Jerusalem last week. This year Detroit has the honor of being host to the Republican national con- vention, which will put forth its candidates for the highest elected offices in the land. The person who will stand as the Republican candidate for the Presidency of the United States is a man of compe- tency, trust and honor: MAX M. FISHER Ronald Reagan. His welfare reform program reduced the case load while increasing benefits to the truly needy. Ronald Reagan will draw this country out of the inflation-recession quagmire into which Carter has lead it. His economic record is out- standing. When he took office as governor, California was ridden with debt; when he left, the state had a half- billion dollar surplus, and that was after he re- turned $5.7 billion to the people in tax rebates. Our armed forces must be rebuilt, and Reagan is the man to do it. He is opposed to a peacetime draft, but he will increase pay to service people, expand our reserves, and make full use of our superior technology. He be- lieves in a strong America, an America that will stand up to its adversaries and RONALD REAGAN stand by its friends. Reagan is fully aware that Israel is a valuable ally of the United States, and has repeatedly stated that Israel is America's only re- maining strategic asset in the Middle East. His dedica- tion to its freedom and secu- rity is unquestioned. His policies are clear: Full mili- tary backing of Israel; no negotiations with a PLO bent on Israel's destruction; no Palestinian state; a united Jerusalem under Is- raeli sovereignty. Reagan is no newcomer to Jewish affairs. As governor, he saw through passage of a bill which allowed banks and other institutions to purchase Israel Bonds. He himself was instrumental in the sale of $10 million in Bonds to the non-Jewish community, for which Abba Eban presented him with the Israel Medallion of Valor in 1971. During the Six-Day War, he spearheaded one of the biggest pro-Israel rallies ever held in California. When he learned that his country club would not admit with the Portuguese depart- ing from Angola and Mozambique and the estab- lishment of Zimbabwe. He explained that the policies of the South African gov- ernment regarding the non-white population have been constantly changing , and being liberalized." He noted also that "Jews tend to be liberal, by South African standards, and con- tinue to do much to ameliorate the condition of the underprivileged there." South Africa's Jewish community is "a model community for its organiza- tion, discipline, generosity to local and overseas causes and its deep. attachment to and spiritual bonds with Is- rael," Hoppenstein said. It makes its mark on every facet of public life, com- merce and industry, science and medicine, culture, 'art and music, sport and entertainment." Africa Trade WASHINGTON (JTA) — Trade between Israel and South Africa, an issue fre- quently raised by the enemies of both, is a neglig- ible proportion of each coun- try's overall foreign trade. Moreover, it is conducted openly whereas many coun- tries which officially boycott South Africa, trade with it clandestinely. Those points were made by Abe Hoppenstein, Con- sul General at the South Af- rican Embassy in Washing- ton and a South African Jewish community leader, in a recent address at the Northern Virginia Jewish Community Center in Ar- lington. Israel-South African trade represents only one- half of one percent of each country's total trade or the equivalent of one cent in two dollars, Hoppenstein said. By any measurement, trade with South Africa by the U.S., Western Europe and Third 'Worldcountries far exceeds Israel's. "The enemies of both countries were con- stantly endeavoring to bedevil" Israeli-•outh African trade, he said. "Not only Britain, France, West Germany and the U.S. trade with South Africa but many Third World nations do so as well. The only dif- ference is that Israel trades with South Africa by day and the Third World nations trade with us by night," he added. Hoppenstein noted "the great atmosphere of change in the world today," particu- larly in southern Africa Jews, he withdrew his membership. Reagan has demon- strated his commitment. He is a friend, a man we can trust. I intend to vigorously work for his election. We have tolerated the present Administration long enough. The ,Carter experiment has failed. This election is our opportunity to rebuild America. Let us seize the opportunity and make our next President Ronald Reagan.
