Bassett 0,0 11311 Asar. ■ •,.. ■ •• MIN A'ACE-p it 53 The Board of Governors of the Jewish Welfare Federa- tion has approved alloca- tions totaling $236,358 for capital improvements at four of its agencies. The largest, up to $192,500, represents half the cost of the first major renovation program at Borman Hall since that Jewish Home for Aged structure was opened in 1964. The other half of the expenditure for new furni- ture, interior remodeling and numerous other im- provements will derive from specially-designated funds contributed to the home. According to JHA Execu- tive Director Charles S. Wolfe, the project reflects an awareness of how environment affects the aged person's level of func- tioning. The use of color, for example, has a predomin- ant role. A basic color for each floor will provide a code whereby residents can identify where they live. In addition, no five consecu- tive rooms will have the same color bedspread so residents have less chance of wandering into the wrong room. Further improvements to provide a more home- like atmosphere, includ- ing wall _ coverings, lounge chairs, planters, a cheery dining room decor and a canopied patio area outdoors, are planned. The board also approved $24,358 for renovations and repairs --at the United He- brew Schools Twelve- Mile- Lahser headquarters. The improvements include re- surfacing the parking areas, interior painting and re-carpeting a. number of rooms. Aid Available The Jewish Community Council of Metropolitan De- troit has been notified of a free loan - service offered to convalescents in need of home hospital equipment. H.E.L.P. (Hospital Equipment Loan Project) is a program developed by League-Goodwill which makes available hospital beds, side rails, wheel chairs, walkers, crutches and other speciality items to patients in the tri-county area for a specified time period. All that is required is that patients have a doc- tor's or nurse's prescription stating the type of equip- ment needed. H.E.L.P. has its own de- livery van to bring and re- trieve any equipment. Page. Associate chairmen are Hugh W. Greenberg and Herbert P. Sillman. It was noted that the building, which was opened in 1969-1970, has been in constant use by both stu- dents and community groups. Akiva Hebrew Day School has its classrooms there, and the Hebrew Free Loan Association has an office in the administration area. A sum of $15,000 was al- located to Jewish Family Service for new equipment installation to correct switchboard overloading. The agency has received close to 800 phone calls per day, which is beyond the planned capacity of its orig- inal equipment. Because of the heavy traffic, an-alter- native system, involving a second answering point, was proposed. The changeover will benefit both JFS and the Resettlement Service, which shares the system. JFS will also receive a simi- lar special capital grant from United Foundation. The Jewish Commu- nity Center was recipient of the fourth capital im- provement grant. This sum of $4,500 will match the share contributed by the Center's Senior Citi- zens Council for installa- tion of soundproofed partitions at the Jimmy Prentis Morris Branch in Oak Park, now being enlarged and renovated. The partition will pro- vide for greater flexibil- ity in the use of new space, where senior citi- zens gather for many ac- tivities.
