An essay by a Soviet
mathematician condemn-
ing the Russian establish-
ment for "allowing racial
hatred to overwhelm their
appetite for scientific truth"
has been published in
America by the Southern Il-

Grigori Friedman's "It
Seems I Am A Jew: A
Samizdat Essay" has been
circulating in the Soviet
underground for nearly two

The `Samizdat' (self-
published) essay denounc-

towards scientists and
mathemeticians -was trans-

Southern Illinois Univer-

Friedman details his
own career, telling how
in the late 1940s and early
1950s, despite a rating of
"excellent" on the
entrance exam, he faced
a prolonged struggle to
get into graduate school.
He documents the anti-
Semitism he faced, sum-
marizing interviews and
reproducing corre-
spondence.
In his essay, Friedman
cites evidence that Jews
must take special, far more
difficult entrance examina-

that Jewish department
heads at universities are
summarily and rudely re-
duced in rank; dissertations
written by Jews are
routinely rejected, often un-
read; and Jewish
