Speaking of licenses to sell beer, wine and whiskey, Healthy Jones on North- western Highway got the of- ficial thumbs down a few month ago on its bid for the profitable, much sought after permit to sell the hard stuff. The barley and hops in beer may be nutritious and wine may be fine, but the powers-that-be decided health foods and alcohol don't belong on the same menu. Owners Don and Betty Wittenberg were quoted as saying the lack of a license to sell beer and wine doesn't keep the steady flow of customers away and that's obvious. The Wit- tenbergs weren't in- terested in serving booze, but there's no such thing in Southfield as a tavern license which restricts what customers imbibe. Healthy Jones is a vitamin-packed success with dozens of meatless dis- hes. Anything that can be done with vegetables and more is done in this atmos- phere of vim, vigor and vit- ality. Have you ever wondered why some restaurants close their doors after enjoying many years of success? Stouffer's at the Northland Center closed last summer after 25 years in business. The long lines of lunch and dinner customers attested to the good if not plentiful IT'S THAT TIME AGAIN! crabble Reservations' Suggested 562-4000 dots 22041 MICHIGAN • DEARBORN 1 MILE WEST OF THE HYATT REGENCY 4th BIRTHDAY JULY 7, 8, 9 & 10 secifood.beefsspirits SUPER SPECIALS FOR THE OCCASION BOSTON SCROD . • • MMMMMMMMM • STUFFED FLOUNDER ALMONDINE WHOLE MAINE LOBSTER • • . $595 $695 $995 And By Popular Demand Our Famous FINNAN HADDIE $6 50 The Above Dinners Include A Specially Prepared Crabbie Joe's Bountiful Salad Bar Extravaganza! . . . The meals at the popular, con- veniently located restau- rant until the past few years. William Black, man- ager of Stouffer's, claimed declining profits forced restaurant offi- cials to close the facility. The lease ran out and the building was much larger than the volume, he said, adding that the company would direct its efforts toward its smaller, spe- cialty restaurants. Black said the restaurant wasn't losing money but ex- perienced a definite drop in guests in the last four or five years. Lunchtime business was good, he maintained, but dinner customers were mainly retirees on fixed in- comes who didn't want to prepare meals at home. The regulars still came, he said, but not as frequently. Stouffer's remodeled its Northland Inn restau- rant across the street in hopes of attracting the closed dining spot's loyal customers, Black said. But the sixth floor facility in the hotel doesn't ap- pear to be attracting as many customers as it used to. Trio in the 12 Mile- Northweatern area of Southfield was another res- taurant casualty. One early mistake was the $10 menu which wasn't bad if you or- dered steak but was a turn- off to those who had to pay the same price for chicken or fish. That situation was remedied, but the three- room eatery continued to operate beset with financial snags. The restaurant finally went into Chapter 11 and has since been taken over by FTD. The Meyersons, who owned the Trio and invested a lot of green stuff into it, also closed the doors of its once popular Scotch & Sir- loin on Northwestern Highway in Detroit. The "Scotch," where the elite met to eat, meet and be entertained in a gala, noisy atmosphere, is now Fogo's Seafood and Spirits. The restaurant features a raw bar and seafood prepared in a dozen different ways. But we miss Carl Steger and his piano bar. Carl greeted the regulars by name, sang their favorite songs and generally livened up the "Scotch," contribut- ing to its reputation as a fun place. One final observation — restaurants may come and go but there certainly isn't a dearth of liquor-serving or "dry" dining establish- ments in Southfield's 12 Mile-Northwestern area. Some officials call it "res- taurant row," others call it "honky tonk" but supping and sipping spots in the area keep multiplying like wild mushrooms. If you're bored some Sunday after- noon, take a ride out 12 Mile-Northwestern way and count the bars and eateries. country's biggest employer is public services with some 370,000 employees.
