Tradition-breaking events may shake your complacency but must be dealt with calmly and objec- tively. This brings to mind a friend who turned 50 in 1973 without apparent sweat or tears. We were in a restaurant up north a month after the big 50th birthday and were deciding between the $10 lobster and the $9 steak (BI — Before Inflation). , Suddenly this much older friend turned pale and in a quivering voice read aloud from the menu, "Special $2 dinner for senior citizens 50 and older." "Let's get out of here," she demanded. If they gave it away for nothing, I wouldn't be seen dead eating a senior citizen dinner at the age of 50." If reduced prices were of- fered to 50-year-olds at all eating spots, movies and other entertainment events, reluctant persons who just reached the half- century mark would either have to refuse the discount, grin-and-bear-it or be forced to sit home and watch tele- vision after dining in. Speaking of dining in and inflation, have you ever thought of boycotting meat? It's getting so that many consumers no longer ask how much hamburger is a pound. They want to know how much it is a carat. And steaks are more precious than a Rembrandt medium rare. There are many ways of cooking tuna fish although even Chicken of the Sea re- jects aren't cheap and Char- lie the Tuna doesn't get thrown back in the water anymore. What can you think of besides tuna casserole, tuna delight, tuna salad, tuna cutlets, tuna sur- prise, Tuna Helper, tuna chow mein and spaghetti with tuna fish balls? If you get desperate, you can always sell your stove and refrigerator and have enough money to eat out for at least six months. By the time you buy new appliances, your self- imposed meat boycott will be over. But maybe your cooking is the taste your family hates three-times- a-day and baking makes you stir crazy. In that case, you need legitimate excuses to have the kitchen declared a disaster area. You might try going out to lunch with your spouse in a restaurant known for its slow service. It you sit there long enough before getting waited on, you might suggest stretching the lei- surely lunch until it's time for dinner so you may as well stay. Sometimes getting a manicure or a hang-nail works and your mate would rather have a bite out than eat home and do the dishes. This is espe- cially effective if you re- member to hide the rub- ber gloves and the dis- hwasher detergent. Have your kitchen painted and hire slow de- corators who are also color blind. Figure it will take them three days to paint the ceiling, three days to paint the cupboards the wrong color and another three days to get the right enamel before they start all over again. Be particular, about or- dering slow-drying paint in a color that's out of stock.
