THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Rabbi Who Led French-Speaking Dies in Montreal MONTREAL (JTA) — Rabbi David Feuerwerker, an eminent scholar and spiritual leader of French- speaking Jews in North America, died June 20 at age 68. The Swiss-born Feuer-' werker was a war hero. During World War II he was chief chaplain for the French Armed Forces of the Resistance Movement. His decorations included the French Legion of Honor, the Croix de Guerre and six ci- tations for bravery. He was the recipient of the Grand Prix of the French Academy for his monumental work entitled "The Emancipa- tion of the Jews in France," and the humanitarian Grand Prix from the French Se- nate. In 1966, after serving as a professor at the Sorbonne in Paris, he immigrated to Canada and later taught Judaism at the University of Montreal. According to Jewish tradition he was recognized as one of the 36 "Pillars of Justice" in the world. Alfred Lakin Alfred Lakin, an attorney who had practiced 50 years in Detroit, died June 21 at age 71. Born in Montreal, Quebec, Mr. Lakin was graduated from the Detroit College of Law in 1930. He was a 50-rear member of the Michigan Bar Associa- tion. Mr. Lakin was the first fund-raising chairman for the Metropolitan Detroit Bnai Brith Council, past president of Harry B: Keidan Lodge of Bnai Brith and a former charter member of Temple Israel.
