Friday, June 21, 1980 41 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Bar-Han Committees Formed for the Sept. 23 Dinner Event Preliminary steps were taken June 19, at a meeting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Stollman, for the annual dinner of Detroit Friends of Bar-Ilan Univer- sity, to be held Sept. 23 at Cong. Shaarey Zedek. Emery Klein, co- chairman of the event with Robert Naftaly, who presided, said the annual nt will be geared to the bration of the 25th an- niversary of Bar-Ilan Uni- versity headquartered in Ramat-Gan, Israel. Plans for the event were outlined by Naftaly, who joined with Klein in describ- - ing the growth of Bar-Ilan University; Dr. Martin Hart, who heads the schol- arship committee; Norman Pappas, scholarship fund chairman; Irving Laker, who will be in charge of an anniversary journal; and Henry Lee, direct solicita- tion co-chairman with Salek Lessman. Other chairmen are Myron Milgrom, schol- arship; David Morrison, jubilee journal; and Joseph Jackier, development chairman, faculty of law. Phillip Stollman, chair- man of the university's global board of trustees, also participated in the meeting. Dr. Leon Fill, a member of the Bar-Ban University board of directors, told of the university's growth and its challenging role in Israel's academic life. Frieda (Mrs. Max) ' Stollman, founder of the na- tional Bar-Ilan University Women's Division, stated that the women's group as an associate of the Ameri- can Friends of Bar-Ilan University will be re- activated and will assume new responsibilities in sup- port of the university. Joseph Jackier, who re- turned from Israel and an extensive study of Bar-Ilan University's recent achievements during a re- turn visit to the university told of the many research projects conducted in the school -of higher learning which has 7,500 matricu- lated students and an addi- tional 2,500 students in ex- tension courses. Jackier told of the assis- tance given in university dies and planning for for citizens and was ecially thrilled by the re- - lts attained in the corn- terized Responsa pro- gram. He said that the tra- ditional Jewish Shealot u-Teshuvot, the questions and answers on major Jewish religious and social problems, are compiled in 500,000 questions in this computerized collection. The services it renders pro- vide information constantly sought by researchers and all seeking information on Jewish ethical and religious laws. The Bar-Ilan-Brookdale project is expected next year to have more than 500 senior citizens auditing any of 300 courses, ranging from psychology to computers to Bible studies. The Israel National Adult Education Association has awarded its biannual Lapid Award to the Bar-Ilan- Brookdale program for "creating a new model for integrating senior citizens into university life and for encouragement of intergen- erational dialogue." Jackier said most partici- pants in the subsidized pro- gram take two or three courses and sit in regular university classes with the young undergraduates as full participating students in all the give-and-take of university learning. The success of the Bar-Ilan ef- fort has stimulated similar programs for such "new old" senior citizens at several other Israeli universities. In parallel effort, Jackier said, the "HaKesher" proj- ect has been launched by which regular students at Bar-Ilan adopt isolated home-bound older persons or couples and pay regular visits to bring social and cultural contacts in the var- ious areas which may inter- est them. In its initial year 25 students enriched the lives of their "HaKesher" (Contact) _ "foster grandparents."
