Walter Shapero was re-
elected president of Temple
Beth El at its 130th annual
meeting.

Bat Mitzva by Proxy Marks
Plight of Russian Jewry

The Bat Mitzva of Marina
Uchitel of Kiev, Ukraine,
will be celebrated by - proxy
at Adat Shalom Synagogue
Saturday when Suzanne
Nussbaum is called to the
Torah for her Bat Mitzva.
Marina is the daughter of
Ilya and Tatyana Uchitel,
Soviet Jews, who were dis-
missed from their jobs after
applying for exit visas to Is-
rael. They wish to be re-
united with Uchitel's par-
ents in Petah Tikva, Israel.
During the Bat Mitzva
ceremony, geared to draw
attention to the plight of the
Soviet Jews, there will be an
empty chair on the bima in
