The "meeting at the Portico d'Ottavia" as it is officially called, drew thousands of Roman Jews, and other Ita- lians plus tourists into the Via Portico d'Ottavia and the three or four side streets surrounding Rome's main synagogue — an area inha- KnoAn tv the n ti .. ,,„.. ff10 0 8 Inc. This year the program was rich with features grounded in an historial awareness of the Rome Jewish community. An ex- hibition reconstructing the story of the five "scale" ("shuls") of various Jewish ethnic origins that were once housed where the main synagogue, currently under repair, now stands was put together on the basis of photographs and layouts that were gathering dust in the city's archives. The opening, in the basement of the synagogUe, the area of the "Spanish Temple," was attended by Italian notables, the chief rabbi and head of the Rome Jewish community and the Ambassador of Israel in Rome. Another highlight, truly unique both as a tradition and as a "happening" was the sign-off of the day: the "Mishmara." Dating back to the custom in Biblical times of gather- ing at the table with food, wine, prayers and songs the night before a circumcision was to-take place, the "Mis- hmara" in Rome was ex- tended around the 16th Century, to include all- night joyous vigils before other main events in Jewish life such as weddings. New Therapy Discussed at AJCommittee Seminar By ROBERT POLNER NEW YORK (JTA) Ethnotherapy — not a cul- tish mind control technique, but a new form of group therapy under study by California psychologist Judith Klein which relates ethnicity to emotional sta- bility — was the subject of a recent American Jewish Committee panel discussion here. Ms. Klein, who got the . idea for her study from par- ticipating in black-white encounter groups in the 1960s, told over 100 persons that problems of Jewish identity and self-esteem are far-reaching in this coun- try. Her therapy has al- ready helped some Jews who participated in her re- search identify their hang- ups and sometimes allevi- ate them, she said. — The multi-ethnic panel of four served as an introduc- tion to Ms. Klein's just- completed study "Jewish Identity and Self-Esteem: Healing Through Ethnotherapy." In her research Ms. Klein led several group ethnotherapy sessions for 32 hours over an eight-week period and later followed up with in- dividual interviews. The subjects were asked to discuss a variety of Jewish issues, and many identified anxieties about everything from sexual The end of man is action, relations with non-Jews and not thoUght, though it and abstract notions of historical figures, to be of the noblest. negative images of Jewish looks. "What was conceived of as WASP looks was more val- ued than what was con- ceived of as Jewish looks," Ms. Klein said of the "ambi- valent identifiers" — those who attributed their most valued and despised traits to Jewishness but never re- AND ENGLISH solved the conflict. Society pre- sents a conflict for Italian- Americans, he said, because while Roman Catholic tra- dition emphasizes personal care for the elderly, Ameri- can culture stresses youth, financial success and get- ting old people out of the way by sending them to nursing homes. The other speakers were Harvard professor of psy- chiatry Alvin Poussaint and Rabbi Irving Greenberg, di- rector of the National Jewish Resource Center. Poussaint said he saw a definite need for Klein's study because he "has never had a black patient or a Jewish patient" that has not in some way related prob- lems to his ethnic back- ground. Greenberg added that Klein "has shown us there is room and hope for improvement" in building Jewish pride and identity. re CAIRO (ZINS) — Egyp- tian President Anwar Sadat told the Israeli newspaper Al-Hamishmar that he sought the advice of Au- stria's Bruno Kreisky and President Romania's Ceaucescu before accepting Menahem Begin's 1977 in- vitation to visit Israel and start the Middle East peace initiative. Sadat denied that Begin's election triumph was the prime consideration. "I would have begun the peace process with Shimon Pe or Golda Meir, or even former Premier Mos Sharett," Sadat said. WC.
