Against: John Conyers (D), Harold Sawyer (R) — 2. Not voting: John Dingell ' (D), Lucien Nedzi (D), Guy Vander Jagt (R) — 3. Gary Brown, Philip Ruppe and E. Cederberg are not listed. It is important in this forthcoming election of Congressmen to know who are Israel's friends in the Michigan congressional delegation. Our views on is- sues of Israel's security, East Jerusalem, the settle- ments, follow-through on- the Camp David Agree- ments, economic aid for Is- rael, rejection of PLO ter- rorists and a Palestinian state on the West Bank, etc., etc. should be made known to them, and their favorable and sympathetic action towards Israel acknowl- edged via letters, telegrams or personal calls. The House also deleted the entire aid to Syria by a vote of 320 to 1. In the de- bate on this measure, Con- gressman Broomfield made the following comment: Syria plays a "destructive role" in Lebanon and gives monetary and military sup- port to the PLO. "To con- tinue our aid program to Syria," he stated, "would undercut those very objec- tives we hope to achieve in the Middle East. It would undermine, not enhance, respect for the U.S. among both friends and adver- saries in that region." He also singled out Israel as a "friend that has already made many sacrifices for peace this past year." ir epresentatives ... In reporting King Hus- sein's visit to the U.S. and his talks with President Carter, the reason given for the king's steadfast refusal to accept the Camp David agreements and get involved in the U.S.-sponsored peace negotiations is that he in- sists on Palestinian self- determination and Is- raeli withdrawal from the (now called persis- tently) occupied ter- ritories. It may be instructive to quote from a personal inter- view with President Sadat by the Maariv correspon- dent in Cairo, Shmuel Segev, in which Sadat had this to say about Hussein: "He is schizophrenic .. . In his political actions he moves from one extreme to another . . . Saudi Arabia buys him and pays him and his family a monthly salary . . . Money to Hussein is next to godliness." Sadat disclosed in his interview that after Camp David there was a secret meeting between Hussein and his leaders. When he was asked by them why he did not join the peace talks for, after all, he had had a number of contacts already with the Israeli leaders, Hussein replied that "he is not Sadat and that his coun- try is a small one . . . that both Sadat and the Israelis have deceived him . . . and that Sadat — with all his political prestige and weight ---- could have pro- claimed openly that the PLO is not the only repre- sehtative of the Palestinian people .. . "Hussein stated that he could not make such an open declaration because Jordan could not permit herself to face the danger of losing the large sums of money she is receiving from the Arab oil countries and that she must not arouse the wrath of the Rejectionist Frpnt," Friday, June 21, 1980 23 THE AFFORDABLE CLUB FOR ALL SEASONS IS GIVING YOU ONE SEASON FREE Something special is happening - at Hamilton Place. This will no doubt put in danger the exit of Russian Jews al- together .. . _ But, why should we spend our precious resources on people whose majority cares nothing about anything Jewish unless it is given free? Our first priority should be our youth, who are assimilating in tragic proportions. Jewish education of our children must be vastly im- proved. Otherwise, we will disappear in the next 50 years or so. That is where our re- sources should be spent, not on people who prefer American luxuries instead of life in Israel.
