Jewish Student Petition Right
Is Upheld in California Case

NEW YORK — The
American Jewish Congress
has hailed as a "major vic-
tory for civil liberties" a
unanimous decision by the
U.S. Supreme Court up-
holding the right of Hebrew
Sunday-school students to
collect signatures at a
California shopping center
protesting the United Na-
tions anti-Zionist resolu-
tion.
The AJCongress had filed
a friend-of-the-court brief in
support of the public's right
to circulate petitions or
otherwise peadefully exer-
cise their rights of free
speech in privately owned
shopping centers.
The case, "Pruneyard
Shopping Center v. Robins,"
arose in San Jose, Calif.,
over a dispute between the
shopping center's owner
and Jewish students at San
Jose's Temple Emanu-El
who, as part of a class proj-
ect, sought to collect signa-
tures for a petition opposing
the UN resolution con-
demning Zionism as a form
of racism.

NEW YORK (JTA) — An
organization calling itself
the North American Coali-
tion for Women in Israel has
been established to deal
with what it terms the grim
reality of the lives of women
in Israel.
The founding national
conference took place here
last week and for 2 1/2 days
explored the personal, pro-
fessional and religious
status of Israeli women, ac-
cording to Ellen Bob, editor
of The Journal, the publica-
tion of the North Shore
Jewish community in
Salem, Mass., who will emi-
grate to Israel in 1981.
The declaration of princi-
ples adopted by the 200
women attending the con-
ference stated that "we sup-
port the struggle for equal-
ity of Israeli women
through our activism. We
recognize that the prelimi-
nary basis of this activism is
aliya, thereby sharing the
responsibility of improving
Israeli society."
The declaration called
on the Knesset and-gov-
ernment of Israel "to
allow secular solution for
secular people and we
demand full expression
and legal recognition to
all branches of Judaism.
We call on the Orthodox
rabbinate to increase
their sensitivity to
women's issues and to di-
rect steps towards red-
ressing sexual equality."
The Coalition for Women
in Israel was founded to
support the efforts of the Is-
raeli women's movement, to
develop a support system for
North American olot
(women immigrants to Is-
rael), and to provide educa-
tion about the status of
women in Israel, Ms. Bob
reported.

After being ejected by
the shopping center's se-
curity personnel, the stu-
dents brought suit in
state court to establish
their right to petition.
The Supreme Court of
California decided in
their favor. Pruneyard's
owner then appealed to
the United States Sup-
reme Court, claiming that
the California court's rul-
ing infringed on property
rights protected by the
United States Constitu-
tion.
