The Best of Everything
A NEW CONCEPT in
dining . . . a la a third gen-
eration . . . could be an ap-
ropos description of the new
Angelo on the Plaza-restau-
rant recently opened in the
Bloomfield Plaza on Tele-
graph and Maple.
The same owners of Davi-
son Coney Island, Steve
Lampos and sons Angelo
and Elias and daughter
Elizabeth, have opened
what can certainly be
classified as anything but a
Coney Island operation.
There are great hambur-
gers . . . salads . . . lunch
and dinner specials . . . fish
plates . . . desserts galore
. . . almost everything from
a sandwich to a complete
meal in just about whatever
type of food people feel like
eating.
And you can't beat the
chefs ... experts like
northwest stalwarts
Steve Garontakos, Jim
O'Grady and Ray Taylor,
who worked with Steve
in the '50s at Frank Ga-
gen's on W. McNichols.
Of course there are the
noted Davison standbys .. .
chili, same original Davison
Coney Island, Linwood
Loose Hamburger, Davison
and Linwood Special (com-
bination loose hamburger
and hot - dog).
Who would have thought
that a Lampos operation
would be serving tropical
drinks? . . . and health
fadists are going ga-ga over
the beverages made with
fresh fruits and vegetables
. . . apricot shake, straw-
berry shake, banana
pineapple shake, orange
shake, papaya shake . . . all
made with ice cream . . .
Plus a drink called The
Vegertarian, beets, carrots,
celery, cukes and radish
shake . . . made with yogurt.
Tracing the steps of Davi-
son Coney Island . . :There
was Clairmount and Lin-
wood from 1924 to 1944
known as Linwood Coney
Island . . . Then to Davison
and Linwood as Davison
Coney Island in 1944 across
from the Avalon Theater .. .
The Linwood place was
kept, but in 1971, the Lam-
pos family also opened an-
other one in Oak Park on W.
Nine Mile and Coolidge ..
which is still run by Steve
and wife Victoria Lampos
. . . The Linwood spot was
sold in 1976.
Today's Angelo on the
Plaza was put together
by Paul Kales and Myer
Mandelba-um of K and M
Bldg. Co., who can be
proud of their handiwork
. .. It seats 100 in two airy,
intimate rooms that ooze
of ultimate relaxed din-
ing in a beautiful color
scheme atmosphere of
oranges, tans and
browns ... Each room
has different seating ar-
rangements . . . and its
own individuality ...One
room has a bar, bar
stools, leather booths, tile
and carpeted floor . . .
and the huge open
kitchen where people can
see their cooking on dis-
play amidst a sea of stain-
less steel and gleaming
tile . . . Second room is all
carpeted and has leather
booths, tables with
armed and padded
wicker chairs ... The
entire restaurant is sur-
rounded with mirrors.
Angelo Lampos is the
youthful head of this popu-
lar spot . . . Another
brother, behind the scenes,
Eli, is a pharmacist at Sen-
try Drugs in the Evergreen
Plaza on 12 Mile and Ever-
green.
Everything is done in ex-
cellent taste . . . The pre-
sentation of food is master-
ful . . . I had a bowl of Davi-
son Coney Island chili .. .
and in accordance with the
menu, made up my own
hamburger sandwich .. .
Every platter comes with
different garnishes . . . Ours
was with fresh fruits and
cottage cheese . . . and my
waitress, Kelly Sue God-
dard, was indicative of the
employees such as Jennifer
Huffman,, who helps Angelo
do the coordinating and
scheduling .. .
Plus smiling, courteous
and very attentive Joan
Warner, who brought us a
beautiful cheeseburger on a
sesame seed roll . . . and an-
other array of fresh fruits
and vegetable garnishes .. .
Kelly was efficient, smiling,
polite and courteously at-
tentive.
You can tell good ham-
burger meat . . . and one
bite was enough to reveal
that Angelo on the Plaza is
using the very best.
At a nearby table was
another example of the
wonderful presentation
. A gentleman had a
tuna and salmon salad
served in a white plastic
seashell-type bowl with
celery stalks sticking up
and almost everyone in
the place straining to see.
There are desserts like
homemade rice. pudding,
fresh baked fruit pie,
Alinosi's French Vanilla ice
cream topped with a choice
