26 Friday, June 20, 1980 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Lawrence Jackier Will Lead UJA Young Leadership Body The elevation of Detroiter Lawrence S. Jackier to the chairmanship of the United Jewish Appeal's National Young Leadership Cabinet marks the second consecu- tive year that Detroiters have held the top national UJA young leadership post. Jackier succeeds Stanley D. Frankel, whom he as- sisted as chairman- designate for the past year. Four other Detroiters serve in key executive committee roles this year: Dr. Richard Krugel, co- chairman of the missions program; Joel Gershenson, Judaica chairman; Mark Hauser, YLC Region V chairman; and Irwin Al- terman, Detroit Area chairman. Former chairman of the national missions program, Jackier said plans are under way for a 500-member young lead- ership mission to Irael, under Dr. Krugel's co- chairmanship, from Oct. 30 to Nov. 9. Three sub- missions will each visit one other locale besides Israel: Poland, Hungary or Egypt. Another area elevated in importance by the Young Leadership Cabinet is the Judaica program, chaired by Gershenson. Jackier Several area residents have announced their graduations from profes- sional schools and receipt of honors. Among them are: Susan Tukel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sherwin Tukel of Oak Park, who received a Juris Doctor degree cum laude from the University of Michigan Law School; Dr. Aryeh L. As Region V chairman, Hauser heads the YLC groups in Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky and part of In- diana. Alterman chairs the Young Leadership pro- gramming in the Detroit area. Jackier, who has chaired the YLC leadership de- velopment committee, is a member of the boards of the Jewish Welfare Federation and Jewish Community Center and a member of Federation's Capital Needs Committee and Culture and Education budget and planning division. He was co-chairman of the 1980 Al- lied Jewish Campaign Pro- fessional Service Division. He also staffed the lead- ership development pro- gram of the Toronto Jewish Congress as well as di- visions of the United Jewish Appeal campaign. Formerly, Dr. Juris served with the Associ- ated Jewish Charities of Baltimore and taught at St. Louis University. He holds a PhD degree from the University'of Wiscon- sin and masters degrees in social work and Judaica from the Univer- sity of Maryland and the Baltimore Hebrew Col- lege.
