Enrollment in this free workshop is limited to adults 18 years and older. For information, call Karen Kotulis-Carter, 354-9100. Dr. Lawrence I. Berkove will review his new book, WASHINGTON (JTA) — The House of Representa- tives voted 221-147 June 5 and sent to the Senate foreign aid legislation authorizing $2.18 billion in military and economic aid to Israel. It also authorized $1.3 bil- lion for Egypt and $16 mil- lion for development and training programs for the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Egypt also received from other U.S. sources about $300 million under the Food for Peace Program. While cutting the overall authorization level by 10 percent to $5.2 billion for the fiscal year starting next October 1, the House excluded from this reduc- tion its assistance for Israel, Egypt UNICEF, peace- keeping operations, Ameri- can schools and hospitals abroad and refugee aid. More funds for Syria were barred. The U.S. has $250 million in the pipeline for Syria from previous alloca- tions. While the Administra- tion pared down its re- quest for Syria to $3.5 mil- lion from $90 million a year ago, the House voted 320-71 to reject the re- quest and to ban further aid to Syria. Rep..-Edward Derwinski (R-I11.) led the discussion against aid for Syria, citing Syria's opposition to the U.S. peace initiatives in the Middle East and its mis- treatment of Syrian Jewry. Rep. William Broomfield "Ambrose Bierce: Skepti- cism and Dissent," 7:30 p.m. June 25 in the Marcotte Lecture-Recital Room of the Southfield Civic Center and is free and open to the pub- lic. The Beech Woods Read- ing Center will present Laurel and Hardy films for the whole family 3 p.m. every other Monday from June 30 through Aug. 11 in the multi-purpose room at Beech Woods Recreation Center.
